Questions for 13' Scamp owners

Hey all.  I'm in discussions with Jim at Scamp, choosing the appropriate options and negotiating (?) a price.  We have settled on a 13' standard with the shower / bath package.  Jim told me yesterday that they have dropped the front window in the shower and replaced it with a fan.  Seems to me this would make that space really dark when in there with the door shut.  Has anyone had problems with mold in the shower area or seen a need for a fan in there?

Also, they wouldn't talk about using a lower profile AC unit instead of the one they offer.  Jim said all the low profile units they looked at were 20 lbs. heavier and they didn't want to put that extra weight on the roof.  They did offer to prep it for me if I wanted to install it myself (which I may do).  Will someone send me the Brand and model of their factory AC on a 13' so i can compare the weights for myself.

Has anyone had trouble with insects or mice coming into the unit through the 120V electric connection?  I would prefer the socket mounted to the outside that a shore power cord plugs into.  They wouldn't change that either.

Thanks in advance for all your help.  I'm trying to learning as much as possible before jumping in but, all in all, we love the Scamp and all it represents.

Shower/ bath window

Hi Dennis,we have a 2015 Scamp 13ft and it has the window in the bath..I would think it would be pretty dark in there with the door closed, tho it does have a wall light...I cannot see where a mold problem should be a concern.I do not see a reason for putting another fan in there instead of the window. We do not like the looks of the Ac units on top of the Scamps and did not did one. My husband is doing some searching for differant ideas, enjoy your Scamp when you decide to get one

Shower/ bath window

Thanks for responding.  I asked them about putting the window in instead of the fan and they said no.  I'm finding that the folks at the Scamp factory are not flexible at all.  Business must be too good.

They did confirm that they use the Dometic Brisk II which is smaller and lighter than the older units.  It weights 69 pounds.

I'm waiting for Jim to send me pictures of the bath light and fan before deciding to commit.  The lack of a front window may be a deal breaker.

No Window

I read where someone just picked up their Scamp and they aren't that happy about there being no window in the bath and being replaced with the fan.  There is also a change with the refrigerator.  I am hoping that Scamp lets people know about these changes if they have previously ordered and are not aware changes were being made.

Bath window

I just cant believe that they are changing the window out for a fan and then not telling people about it. I told Launey about that and he said he would not have taken ours if it had been like that.We like that window in the front. We picked ours up in late Nov and we didnt have that problem to deal with...Our salesman was Jim also and we had no problem dealing with him .I hope you can work all this out Dennis and get your Scamp. We are wondering if its because of price or something that they are changing things around

Changes At Scamp

I can say that many stick trailers have eliminated the front window also and I think the major reason is that it is the most likely to leak.  I think a lot of people don't realize, and we didn't, that sometimes the windows need to be removed and resealed.  We had trouble on the Jayco because it was the fiberglass laminated to the foam board and inside paneling and until the wall started to swell, you could not tell there was a problem and by then, it wasn't good.

I do wonder if Scamp made people aware they were going to make changes after the orders were made as I would consider anything less not very good customer service.  While some people wouldn't mind, others might.

Bath Window

We have had our Scamp for about 1 year now, and do enjoy having the bath window in place not just for light when taking a shower etc. but also you are able to release the window hatch locking mechanism so that the hatch will raise when the window is opened to allow air to flow thru the camper and keep the sun off the open window with the bath door open and the fantastic fan is vented going out.  This will circulate air in moments from smells from kitchen cooking etc. with the fan on venting out of course.

I hate the scamp AC units, (They are tall, ugly for the cute Scamp profile, and larger than needed),  as said before by me,  when it is affordable I will have a low profile AC unit installed and be one that I have researched for the weight and convenience of controlling the temperaturers when AC is used.  The big ugly thing on our new scamp freezes up if used in the low cooling mode for very long, the AC is very loud to watch tv if you want to. The AC freezes you out when on high speed.  This is a 13, 500 BTU unit we have, I seen no reason to have one this large in BTU's for the little 13" Scamp, I believe one much smaller will suffice for the little area needing cooling in the Scamp.  To some owners this may not be an issue of concern, but as customers of these scamps I still believe Scamp MFG. should put a listening ear to complaints to make these cute little trailers of ours be the best on the market and they would have to only make a few  changes to consider doing to reach that goal.  True their sales are up, But so are some complaints that I wish would be considered as we are the (Customer).  Remember, you can buy a brand new Fiat for the cost of a new Scamp.  The Scamp has only one moving part, Axel wheels.  The Fiat has many, many parts of quality that everyone's lives are depended upon.  I do not want a Fiat but this is just a comparison, how much can it really cost to make a few upgrades that veteran owners would like to have and newbees have installed because public recomendations from previous owners.

Again I love our Scamp but do wish more consideration of upgrading done by veteran owners would be considered by the MFG and designeers to make a near perfect product for virtually the same price we now pay.  (Fiat or Scamp)??  I still choose the Scamp, sure can't poop in a Fiat.

Just my worthless 2 cents worth.  Scamping season starts for us next weekend at Palmetto Cove Campground at Cleveland, SC.  Hope to see many of you on the road this camping season.

I certainly hope I have not offended anyone by this post comment, I have been accused of that in the past on other boards and do not want to sound as if I am an authority of scamping to anyone with my ideas and thoughts.  Have a Great Blessed Easter Sunday weekend.

Good Comments

All of these posts in this thread are excellent observations and feedback for Scamp Trailers from existing and wannabe owners. I do know from the years I've been in this, that the Scamp folks are very nice people to deal with and that they do read the posts in many of the forums for feedback. Keep working with them Dennis and I'm sure you'll find some resolution. Scamps are great lil trailers and a lot of fun!

I've pondered for years why they don't put an escape window in the Passenger or Driver side at the rear of the 13 and a normal 14" roof vent pre-wired for fantastic fan or put the option fan there when ordered. That non-standard escape vent size they use is a real pain to find when you need to replace it and if an owner wants to add a fantastic fan they have to cut an additional hole in the shell then try and fish wires to it. Many of you know one of my pet peeves is the "Mouse Hole Cord" and I normally change that out first thing to a modern RV Power Connector. I've never understood why they wouldn't want to do that as an option and make money on it. Once they cut the larger hole in the shell for the Mouse Hole, it becomes more difficult to do the conversion.

Gary, you did a very constructive criticism with your post with many valid points so don't think anyone will find it offensive. You've been a terrific SOI member over the last year and bring quite a bit of information and perspective. We love you here and I hope you find SOI a welcoming place and keep sharing your many adventures to come in your Scamp with us. Sorry, couldn't resist doing the trademark Gary Bolding   cool

I Agree

Let's face it, nothing is perfect and when you get a group chanting that something is, you think "cult", well, I do anyway.   This is not the first place or time that I have heard comments such as have been posted.  We have some emerging companies that once they work out the bugs and pick up the pace, might be cause for Scamp to pay a little more attention.

Also, I don't think the comments really cause anyone not to buy a Scamp that have made up their mind but it lets them know what to expect.  Knowing what to expect and how you want to deal with it goes a long way in staying happy.

I have only read a couple of absolutely horrible reviews of Scamp and when it came right down to it, they didn't have a clue what they were buying and just how they could use it successfully.  Their complaints were pretty much what I would expect of a lighter weight trailer.
