I'd agree with you in that the pics and descriptions I've seen on the failure of the epoxy did appear to be oriented to the mount/foot losing adhesion and not the gelcoat side. However, not having examined any personally other than through reports on the forums, I don't know for sure that is the case but suspect you are right on where the failure occurred. I know over the years there have been quite a few awning rails installed with VHB tape and I don't recall hearing about any failures.
