New Flooring - Blinds

When we rehabbed our 1981 Scamp years ago, we redid the flooring with a relatively new product;  Allure Vinyl Planking carried by Home Depot.  It turned out to be such an easy product to install in the Scamp, incredibly durable, and really "popped" the interior look of the trailer.  We also added blackout curtains that we cut from Bed and Bath panels and used a glue gun to make the seams.  Great blackout curtains in 15 minutes that have lasted for years.

Now with our new to us 2005 Escape Trailer, I have selected and ordered the flooring which should be here in about a week.  I'm not sure if I'll get to the project before the Thanksgiving break, most likely after, but I'll post pictures of the entire project.  We selected Amber Ash which seemed to match the grain of the cabinets, but gave a nice contrast in color.

We are going with blackout cordless cellular shades (We like to sleep in) that are also due in about a week.  Right now, there are vinyl blinds so this should be an easy switch.  surprise

If your Molded Fiberglass trailer is needing some updating, these are very easy and fairly inexpensive updates that produces big results.  Stay Tuned.

If you have done Flooring and/or window coverings post your pictures and experiences so we can see the different materials, etc.

Cold storage

Hi Greg, I read the product overview on the Allure flooring. It does look great but it also says to install indoor in a climate controlled environment. My question is how does it hold up when the trailer is in winter storage? Does the cold affect the way it lays on the floor? Are there any other problems that cold storage may cause? Thanks, Jeff.

Being based in Phoenix, I don

Being based in Phoenix, I don't know if we have enough cold storage to give you a complete answer on that. laugh

The floor is a floating installation, much like laminate and the only adhesive is on the tongue that the next piece overlaps.  Installlation is pretty similar to laminate as well.  If the cold storage affected anything it would be the adhesive, but having had the Scamp in plenty of sub 30 camping we never had any issues.  Our Scamp's current owner works for the Grand Canyon and it s stored in very cold temperatures through the winter months up in that area. Scamp and her new owner write home quite a bit and never have had an issue with the allure flooring which is now about 5-6+ years old. So I'd have to say with our experiences it shouldn't be a problem.

I do know on the installation that you must be very attentive to getting the seams very tight before you allow the adhesion to take place.  This prevents moisture from getting in the seams, etc if you have a spill.  I was able to get the seams real tight on my 81 Scamp when I did that job.  I'll be starting the Allure flooring in the Escape after the Holidays and will post up that project.

will it work over vinyl

Hi Greg,

I would like to give that Allure flooring a try but being a floating type floor and some people go right on top of carpet do you think it would work on my vinyl flooring which i presently have?____

where did you purchase it at as i would like to take a small piece of it and let it sit in water overnight to see how it responds.

Hey Joe,

Hey Joe,

I went over existing vinyl flooring in my Scamp and will do the same in the Escape next month.  Worked great, but I wouldn't recommend installing over a carpeting. Allure is carried I believe exclusively at Home Depot.  They have about 6-8 types in stock and small free samples that you can take home to abuse any way you wish.  The one we chose had to be ordered online, but had free delivery to either your home or the store.

This is great stuff for a travel trailer application and has been throroughly tested for 5 years by the Quartzsite Kids in a 13 Scamp in every environment from the Beach to Yellowstone.  It did so well and was so easy to sweep and clean that it was a no brainer for the Escape trailer.

picture of shades

Hi, can you send a picture of your blackout cordless cellular shades? I just bought a 1987 13" and it has pretty nasty curtains that take up too much room. I'd like to add blackout shades since AK is light all summer. How did you mount them to the fiberglass? Thanks!

Curtains Scamp 13

Hi Rachael and welcome to the clubhouse!

Blackout shade post  These are attached to the overhead storage which in the Escape goes around the complete circumference of the trailer.  In the Scamp 13 I always do Custom Blackout Curtains which are very easy with a glue gun and you can make them a good length. If you do any off-road I would recommend the blackout curtains over the Cellular blackout shades.
