Issues with parking your Scamp at home?

My wife asked a great question...

What are peoples experience with parking your Scamp when not in use?

We may be moving to Florida late this year or early next year.
The Michigan winters are too much for our tropical acclimated systems after 26 years of living and working in Central America.

Apparently there may be restrictions in some communities  that regulate/control where one can park a travel trailer, e.g. not in ones driveway.

We will be making sure that where ever we move this will not be an issue, but wondered if there were any tips, suggestions etc. from those with experience.

No HOA's

The biggest tip i can give you is "Stay away from HOA's unless it has an RV gate with no height (higher than the fence) Restrictions. I am in one right now and while the house is gorgeous and the neighborhood is very tidy because of it. I will never do it again if i sell this place. It may be fine for some but not me.

Wherever you go see if there are any "Deed Restrictions" for RV's

Tnx

We will certainly look at HOA and deed restrictions for our new place.  Had not considered checking deed restrictions.

Were we live now people are not supposed to park trailers, boats, RVs, motorized toy haulers etc. in front of their houses on the street.  If your drive is not directly on the street and tucked back a bit it is tolerated.

We have a very steep drive with a large concrete parking area well out of sight form the street.  So should not be a problem here.  Once parked here however in the winter it will not readily be pulled up the hill if we have ice-snow.

Last year we dumped ± 120 lbs of salt on the drive just to reach the street to grocery shop and check mail.  We were able to escape to south Florida for a bat research project in mid February so missed about 50% of northern winter.

So a clue on why we are interested in moving SOUTH ASAP...

I will also need to become aware of Scamp height restrictions for travel.  Eons ago when I coached a bicycle racing team more that one team destroyed >$15K of road bikes (less expensive back then LOL) by pulling into a fast food place and crunching the team bikes off of the roof rack on overhanging building parts..wink

Here to learn from others, what works and what doesn't

HOA's are not just one

HOA's are not just one consideration, as the city in which one lives. That is our issue. We get 48 hours from the city to have our trailer in our drive way. If I call the city for extended days I usually get them. We have no HOA's but the city has restrictions, as the trailer cannot extend in front of the house for permanent parking. So, check city requirements as well.

If a bridge isn't marked it

If a bridge isn't marked it is usually standard to be 13' 6" or higher for semi trucks...... If there is a double yellow or white line in the center of the roadway again it's for commercial traffic and 13' 6" is the norm...... be very cautious of gas station and fast food canopies and trees hanging over back roads.

I'm not certain on Scamp heights but would guess about 8' 5"..... Measure and be certain

scamp parking

I some time ago read that for extended parking for say, the winter season, that the trailer should be jacked up and weight taken off the wheels and axle. Any validity to this?

when we lived in the

when we lived in the northeast and winter storage time came and each tire on a piece of 2x10 we jacked the trailer up but only half way with the tire still on the ground bring the torsion axle to a neutral position (this was to stop the weight of the tire pulling the torsion axle arm down with a possible memory in that position) then we lowered the air pressure in the tires to 10 lbs. covered the tires to reduce UV Exposure and done.

there are so many way to do things so this is just one of them. Of course taking the tires off completely and storing in the basement works too

Off season parking

I am confused as to what you did with the 2x10 boards on the tires.

The first i'm seeing of your question, somehow the notice didn't reach me....

The 2x10 boards where just simply to keep the tires from contacting the earth

trailer storage

We keep our Scamp 13 in the 2 car garage and my wife puts the Civic in the other side.   However we do not have AC on the top and I put small wheels on to get it through the 7 foot door.
