Buy two fleece sleeping bags <$20. Lay down head to toe. Then use the 44" sleeping bag as a cover.
We used a Mattress Toppers - Memory Foam and then a mattress pad, sheet set, and used the sleeping bag as the quilt.
Made for a normal bed type setup.

We do similarly to Greg A. But we also have a way of expanding the 44"....
We initially inserted a piece of masonite, and more recently 1/4' plywood, into the "wing" portions of the gaucho seat backs. When making up the bed, we flip that end of the seat backs towards the center of the trailer...and pull them out away from the back wall. The plywood inserts allow them to cantilever over the edge of the table ca. 4". So the center of the bed, where the additional width is most needed (room for heads and feet is not so critical), approaches 48"!
Now that's a great innovation and first time I've heard or seen that idea.

Cant visualize what you are doing.. any chance for photos in the different stages?
On a related note.. I NEVER could sleep in a sleeping bag. I slept on a shelf in a closet once, but never could in a sleeping bag - even on a nice bed.
Thanks for sharing your information on extending the middle portion of the bed. We just bought our first Scamp and were wondering how we could extend it!

I do not have at hand photos of "the several stages." But here's one of the rear bed, with a foam-filled mattress cover. You will see the center portion extends into the space between the kitchen cabinet and clothes closet. The other two photos show how we widen the front bed (to a full 36"). A similar concept is deployed here. The back of the front bench has 3/4" plywood in it. Using it as the "base," the bed can be cantilevered over the cabinet. (Fitted foam is used to fill the gap to the front wall of the trailer.)
NOW I C !
What a great idea to make the bed into a larger one

I've always found sleeping bags confining and use regular bedding including comforter or lighter blanket, depending on the weather. My 3 dogs prefer this setup as well since they are used to sleeping under the covers in my bed at home - yes, even the 40 lb. hound.
