Brakes

Should be, I always used a horse trailer shop since there were several close by. They just have to pull a wheel and see if the axle has brake flanges so they can be added. If they aren't originally ordered with brakes, Scamp will sometimes install an axle that won't allow for brakes to be added later. If they can be added, the parts are not that expensive and simply bolt on then wired and adjusted. My guess would be that labor will exceed the parts.. surprise

Wyoming-no need to go

My biggest issue was driving through Wyoming.  The wind made the camper feel heavier then it was.  As soon as i crossed into Utah i forgot the trailer was even there.  I am glad i got the brakes and glad i got the 13 ft rather then the 16 ft.  My Forester was fine but i fear the 16 ft would have pushed the safe limit in the larger mountain passes.  I also have the AC which provides a bit more wind resistance as well.  I have also completed another trip with my kids to a local lake and had no issue climbing through the elevation.  On the other hand, there were a few passes in South Dakota and Wyoming i was stuck going about 50 mph just to make the climb. I think the elevation and wind working together caused the struggle.

Query on electric brakes

Newbie here and will not pick our uo our 16' for some weeks.

What is the controller?  I am assuming  a relay that triggers from the brake light switch?

reading above it seems it may not be a straight forward installation?

Tow vehicle is Ford Freestyle, so will I need to go to a dealer for installation vs. the place that is installing the trailer hitch?  Not a U Haul place.

Contoller

The Brake controller unit senses when you apply the brake then sends a signal to the trailer to brake as well.  It allows you to adjust the amount of breaking power on the trailer as well.  Uhual was able to install mine when they installed the hitch.  Some vehicles are wired for a plug and play unit while other vehicles require a bit more finessing (like mine).

Towing and Electric Brakes

I was told the 13's really do not need electric brakes. We are getting our 16 this week and we DO have electric brakes. Not really necessary for flat land driving, but the mountains anywhere require them to be hooked up.

Electric Brakes

We had our hitch put on by E-Trailer here in town. The controller is placed right above my right knee, not where I would have like it to be put, but that is where it is. I have never driven a vehicle with electric brakes for the trailer. I shall know more very soon , as we are driving to South Carolina in a couple of days to get ours!

Be sure that whomever puts in your controller checks to make sure that all the lights work (you need 7-pin).  Mine worked until the first time I went through the car wash and now it would appear that one of the splices is not working correctly.  I'll have to take it back for some rework.

We are working on faith. We will not get our trailer connected until we get to the location in South Carolina. I so hope all works! If not, we are coming home anyway, and I shall take the trailer to the dealer that installed the hitch and wired the connector and electric brakes.

Electric Brakes

I took the illustration from the scamp company to the company that put in the plug aside the hitch. I also have the controller mounted under the dash for electric brakes. All is automatic on the controller.
