Electric Brake Controller

With our 16 ft  Deluxe on order for October we are researching what we need when we go to pick it up..  We are brand new to any trailer towing.  It appears we  need a brake controller for the electric brakes.  Any suggestions on what would work best, as well as anything else we will need?  My tow vehicle is a 2010 Ford Escape 6 cylinder with factory tow package. It is rated at 3,500 pounds.

Also, I understand I need a 7 prong spade plug at the rear of the vehicle to connect to the trailer.  Is this the correct terminology?  I presume any local shop that works on trailers can change my existing plug  as well as install a controller.

Any and all advice will be most appreciated. Thanks

Brake controller

The Tekonsha Prodigy P3 is THE brake controller. The P2 is the older, simpler model, but still is fine. That is the one everybody compares themselves to.

And, yes, the local shop should be able to handle the installation and the 7 pin connector. There is a 7 pin adaptor that you plug your 4 pin into, then run a 10g switched power line to, and the brake controller line to, and you are good to go.

Brake Controller

Thanks.  Just the type of info I was looking for.  By the way, we lived in Cordova, TN from 2016-2010.  Small world.

Brake controller

Hello Ken and Ellen,
I also ordered a new 16' Deluxe scamp, to be ready in Oct, this will be my second scamp. E trailer has every thing you will need for your brake controller. Since you have the tow package all of your wires should be ready to plug in, you will need the controller wire adapter that is specific to your vehicle located above your brake pedal. The blue and black wire that goes to your 7 pin connector in the rear should be there as well, the wires are for your electric brakes.
All the best.

Thanks for the info.  Feel free to give me advise on any and all you wish you knew on your first Scamp.  Can't wait until October.

Yep, it is a small world.

Once, we were hiking in Yellowstone National Park, and taking a break on a bench on a wilderness trail. A group of people hiked up and sat with us. My wife and the lady got to talking, and found they were distant cousins. They had kinfolks in common in Paris, TN.
