Busted Wheel Well

I blew a tire on my Scamp and as it flew apart a piece of it busted a BIG hole in the wheel well and storage bin where the water tank is located.  Has anyone else ever had that happen? I was able to cover the hole with quarter inch metal "rat-wire" then I . fiberglassed over the wire to complete the repair.  Fortunately, none of the damage was visible from the outside or from the inside of the camper except in the closet and in the storage bin. Just wondering if this is a common problem which Scamp might address with a reinforced wheel well, or if this was just a freaky bad luck issue for just me.

Blow out two weeks ago

A member from C-ville Va. had the same issue on a S-13 two weeks ago. Theirs was so bad it took out the water pump. On a 2010 if orig. tires they could be 6-7 YO. Time to replace the rest  of the tires. Eddie

Busted Wheel Well

Thanks for the feedback.  All of my tires are new (one year or less)  I have had blowouts before, but never the body damage.  These small, high pressures tires will blow if the air pressure gets low so I always check them before and during each trip.  I think I probably picked up a nail or tack that made the tire lose pressure and overheat. I think I will talk to Scamp about this - perhaps they can build some kind of extra reinforcement into the wheel well and compartment underside to help with this.  Has anyone else had this to happen on your Scamp?  I am new to the SOI and I already love this chat space.

Scamp wheel wells

Don't expect anything different front Scamp, they have been building them that way since 1972. I think in 82 they changed from plywood to OSB floors that was their only change to the process. Someone brought this subject up several years ago on the FGRV forum. I think they found a bedliner company that sprayed a bedliner product that would help keep things together better.  Sorry I could not find the thread.

Eddie

I did find the video that was used in the thread. Looks like they used rhino liner.
