Breakaway Kit?

Greetings!

I'm still looking for "my" Scamp, and gathering information.  I haven't seen (or been able to find) any discussion regarding "Breakaway" switches / controllers.  Such as:

https://www.etrailer.com/dept-pg-Trailer_Breakaway_Kit.aspx

Is this because the Scamp is light enough to not need one (or require one by law?)  Or is it simply a given, and relatively trouble free...So it doesn't;t get any mention?

Does anyone have any input?  For the record, I was thinking it was a given....Not an option.  But opinions could vary, so I asked!

Scamp does not install the switches

More than half the states require the BA switches with trailer brakes, and it's a good Idea to have one even if not required. Fairly simple install. Run the two wires from the switch into the shell where the rest of the wires enter the shell. Connect one wire to the black battery wire connect the other wire to the blue brake wire . Mount the switch to the frame. Brakes are options on a Scamp so the BA switch is not a standard item. Not required in all states so they don't install them.

Just the messenger.

Breakaway Switch Information

Just some additional info for those who may not know what a Breakaway Switch is...

A Breakaway Device (Switch) is simply a switch that attaches firmly to  the frame of the trailer that has a plastic pin in it which is attached to a long cable. Additionally, this switch is connected to the Positive terminal on the onboard battery and the blue wire going directly to the electric trailer brakes. The cable is attached to the Tow Vehicle with a "Quick Link" or Carabineer.

In operation, if the trailer becomes unattached from the Tow Vehicle the cable pulls out the plastic pin from the Breakaway Device and  applies power directly to the trailer brakes (by completing the circuit) thereby stopping the trailer.

The Breakaway Device is used in addition to the Safety Chains which should prevent the trailer from becoming unattached from the Tow Vehicle.

I like the Red coiled cable on the Fastway brand switches (see Link).

Fastway 80-00-2060 Zip Breakway Cable with Electric Brake Switch, 6'

I would absolutely recommend a Breakaway Switch for EVERY trailer with electric brakes !!!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!
