Almost time! ... and empty gray tanks before travel?

It goes without saying that I am more than a bit excited to pick up my Scamp 13 on Sep 15!yes  Well, I was until I was viewing some of the YouTube owners manual videos and they were talking about the different tanks.  They said to empty the gray tanks before traveling.  What?  Doesn't that discourage boondocking/primative camping?  I had planned on doing this on the way home from Minnesota both in Minnesota and U.P. Michigan. This is what I want a self-contained trailer for crying. Has anyone had issues with traveling without draining the gray water? Funny how one small statement in a video can take the wind out of your sails.

Gray water is what comes out

Gray water is what comes out of your sink or shower. Why would anyone want to pack this around ?

RE: and empty gray tanks before travel?

I don't think Scamp said it was mandatory ;)

Yes, sometimes you can't dump when you want to.

Don't tow around more weight than you need, but if you need to travel with some waste water, then just remember that it can affect the handling of the rig, esp. a full gray water tank.. thats a lot of weight behind the axle and could even be unsafe at higher speed.  Then, dump it when you can.

Traveling with waste in the black water tank can help break down solids but usually that is not needed. Other than that I would always dump before traveling when I could.

I often have about two gallons in the black water tank though.  16 lbs of liquid near the axle is no worry.

We always dump our black

We always dump our black water at the campground we are leaving. We pack a nice gallon jug to fill with water and pour it down the toilet several times for a good rinse and drain.

I enjoy going to campgrounds

I enjoy going to campgrounds (national forest, state forest, primitive, boondocking, etc) that do not have a dump station. I bought the small trailer for the flexibility. I am starting to worry that I made a bad decision. Isn't it ironic that several videos and pics advertising Scamp are usually the trailer sitting all by itself at a lake, not in full service campgrounds surrounded by 35 foot fifth-wheels.

I have sent an email to Scamp with my concerns. I am worried I may have to cancel after waiting 6 months and now it's being built. BLAH!

No Problem

I'm not sure why ur concerned as the Scamp can certainly do any type of camping and certainly is capable of doing the type of camping you are wanting to do. We predominantly do no services camping with our Scamps with no issues. I've towed with tanks at all levels and never encountered any issues. There should be no concern  traveling with full or partially full tanks unless you are trying to tow with a vehicle that is marginal and you really shouldn't be towing with. If the tow vehicle is properly rated you will never know the Scamp is back there and the tank levels won't effect much of anything.

We are here in Hot Springs,

We are here in Hot Springs, at Carherines Landing, surrounded by million dollar busses. Still, right on the lake on nice concrete pads, full hook ups too! Cable is nice as well as Internet. We like such parks and do not care for Boondocking. A short walk to the office for ice cream! This is one fabulous park, the best bathrooms we have ever experienced, along with nice private showers too! I highly recommend this place! So much to do in downtown Hot Springs, or the many lakes around here.

Grey water tank support

Tim

I know grey water is a big deal now in the NF and people need to haul it out to a dump station or proper disposal or you will get a ticket.

The grey water tank holds appox. 20 gal. if full, about 160 lbs. The tank is located at/below floor/frame level and as close as possible as it can be to the C/G. Even when full it will only slightly decrease your tongue weight. Since you plan to boon dock, dual LP tanks should more than offset any CG issues. Also consider if you are traveling with grey water you will most likely be running with black water up front which off set the CG issues since the black water is twice as far from the axle.

Now tank support issues. The grey water tank is held in place by approx. 20 screws and two metal straps. Each strap now supports 100 lbs. of static weight full. If you have any concerns at all just have Scamp add two or three more metal support straps to the tank which is very easy for them to do. Or do it yourself.

Enjoy your Scamp.

Eddie

Sigh of relief!  Scamp

Sigh of relief!  Scamp actually CALLED me today to assure me that traveling with water in the gray tank is not an issue with my Ford F150.  Great customer service.  The warning is there just as several here have pointed out that many people who buy Scamps have smaller tow vehicles and for those it could be an issue with the added weight.

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement!laugh  And... I plan on stopping at an ice cream place when in town getting groceries for sure LOL Although in September it may be a tad cool in the Michigan U.P., I hope some are still open!
