We are new Scamp owners to a 2004 13. From what we where told, it has sat idle much of its life outside, uncovered. The inside fiberglass cabinets and benches have turned a tan color. When I removed the screen door I could tell to what extent. Under the door frame it was bright white. I have seen posts of people painting the cabinets, but would like to bring the gel coat back to white if positive. Less chance of chipping and scratching that way. Has anyone had success in doing this? How did you accomplish this? I have tried buffing with a aggressive compound and pad with no success yet. I am thinking about sanding through the stain, but am afraid of going through the gel coat.
thanks for any input.
It sounds like smoke damage. is there any smell to it?
No smell. Somehow I have failed to take any pictures since removing the screen door to show the difference. I will take/ post one tomorrow.
A 2004 would be nearly 20 years old. To me, it sounds like typical yellowing from age. My Scamp is a '77 and all of the original fiberglass components are yellow. It don't bother me because I spend most of my time outside anyway...
Please excuse me...I need to go camping now
Will it wipe off with Acetone?
I tried acetone before buffing with no luck.
"Bring It On" cleaner works really well on fiberglass showers, and it noticeably brightens up the color. If the discoloration is just on the surface, I'd bet this stuff will clean it fast. It's also very safe, no fumes and gloves aren't even required.
Well, we have tried several different cleaners with no results. I did the rubbing compound with no results. Finally took to it with a da and 800 grit paper. It removed the "stain" but not easily. We have decided to scuff and paint.
