Simple little changes that may interest you on your Scamp

I must be in a writting mood tonight, here is a few little simple suggestions we have done to our Scamp, I will include photos of each:

Because we will be getting up to travel real early in the morning at times during our trip North, I wanted to be sure if I was partaily asleep while hooking up  before we leave that I would be able to do a once around with a flash light if at night or really any time and be alert that my support outriggers / levelers on the camper are stored properly.  I do not want to drive off & bend them & your bumper which I am sure has happened, being black it is easy to overlook, but my favorite SAFETY color is Yellow and I choose to paint the rear support legs bright yellow to catch my eye on inspection before leaving, especialy in the dark.  On the right photo I also painted the flat tongue jacking up or down foot bright yellow for exactly the same reason as the rear levelers.  You can see the front jack foot support if it is all the way up in stored position before driving off and having it partially up and hit something (speed bump) and tear hell out of your trailer jack and bend your trailer tongue.  Also if leaving at night you will not forget to pull up the foot support in the first place.  This is only a suggestion, it may take away from the black pretty new metal etc. but Black is easy to overlook at a glance, yellow make you jump up and down with glee that you had reminded yourself to stow the front and back trailer supports in their travel positions because of a safety color you used.

My wife has been modifying the inside of our Scamp, she come up with a quick, cheap way to separate the toilet area from the shower area.  Have no idea why MFG. did not do this think to do something like this??  But anyhow, after taking a shower you know the toilet will get all wet, and to a woman especially, if she had to sit down to go to the bathroom no matter if the water anyplace on the toilet is just shower water, she will think it is piss!!  Not a happy thought.  so Linda purchased an expandable shower curtain rod and got a shower curtin at Anna's, about $8 for both.  She mounted it so expandable shower curtin rod rests on the right hand side of the shower on the fiberglass divider betweent the rat fur and fiberglass on the right hand side in front of the toilet seating area.  Where the curtin meets the Rat fur siding she adjusted the tension on the left side on the fiberglass of the shower / toilet area. We have not tested this under traveling circumstances, if the rod flexes and loosens I will come up with a bracket glued on the fiberglass with a indention in it for the shower curtin rod to rest in securely.  She then cut the bottom of a long shower curtin till it was the length to shower deck floor of the shower to keep the toilet area completely dry from shower splashing.  so now all we have to do is close the new shower curtin to keep the toilet area nice and dry and also now we can use the back of the toilet area for plastic containers of our chemicals for the sewage tanks.  Also when in the shower, you can place your towel on the toilet until needed to dry off.  All this is simple, but something needed unless you like sitting in pee!!  Another selling feature that women in particular would love to know, this was the very fist thing my wife noticed when the door to the toilet / shower was opened.  She muttered, NO DAM Way is this good!!  So a simple fix by her made her happy to poop and shower in the same area with no more problem.

Excellent Tips

Hey Gary,

Awesome idea on painting the Stabs and tongue base!  Never seen that one before.  Hunter safety vest orange would make a good color for them as well.

The problem we'd have with curtaining off the toilet/shower is that it is easier for us to sit down on the toilet for about half the shower. Our MIL gets so tickled when she looks at the bathroom in our trailer that you can poop and shower at the same time.  blush

Simple changes to consider

Hello Greg,

Glad we made contact.

Yea, I agree if I had the florescent paint you mention for the back support legs and tongue foot would of probably been better, but this yellow is all I had and I wanted to have it all done to go this weekend and not be half butted.  It did really remind me to walk around the camper 1st, before doing anything to pack up and leave, and to lower the tongue a little to raise the back trailer supports easier, then raise the tongue to the tow vehicle height needed to connect up to go.  I will tell you now, the battery operated torque gun raised that tongue and lowering it was awesome.  The very best thing I have done for myself for setting up so far.  Consider doing this.  You'll love the ease of connecting up and not get all pissed when you hit your hand on the gas tanks etc.

Linda, Me , two mexican dogs and two guinea pigs just got back from our Maiden test voyage to the campground we are members of about 50 miles from our home for the weekend.  We tested everything and it all functioned great.  Only thing we did not do yet is test the shower.  Now I would love for you to have your MIL use your toilet AFTER you took a shower just to get her reaction then!!   Bet it won't happen only once.  Shower and poop at the same time is a great idea, naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, no way.  Just the thought is disgusting, especially to wife.

I am also going to find a material such as on the sink cover, maybe 3/8" thick to place on the shower top  lip to act as a step platform putting you more comfortably on the toilet.  The reason is, when we step on the shower floor to get on the toilet, my wifes legs are short and it is a PIA to get saddled on the toilet, in the middle of the night just to relieve your bladder.  I find myself sliding back on the toilet as well to get on it because of the height being mounted on the  toilet waste tank,   If you are over 6' tall you got no problem.  I too have to rest my footing on the sides of the toilet tank, if my feet do not touch the ground I am affraid of height, LOL. only kididng here.  But I do like the idea not having to slide back on the toilet and over time the toilet may loosen or worse, break the bond between the toilet and tank.  Just a thought here, but one I will do for our comfort.  This toilet / shower step  would be removeable of coarse for the shower use, and that is once a day so no problem.  Using the batheroom toilet, now that is a different story.

I will include photos as I have other stuff so far especially if it works for us.  I love the quality of the toilet though, something to brag about to me anyhow, I just want to  protect it from being damaged or broken.  On our way to Alaska.  I have a lot more information about our first trip that I hope will interest others when we get back from walmart to get a few more things we need, (Mirror on the outside of bathoom door) for wife and me to dress in front of, comb hair etc.  We plan to put one hanging hook on each side of mirror as well to hang our clothes worn for the day so when we go to bed we got a place to place them as we undress.  Again, this is for our comfort, have no idea what you all do but maybe will get feedback here and better ideas as well.

Thanks again for replying Greg,

Maiden trip to campground, more simple modifications to Scamp

Hello Everyone,

Well this weekend, (Memorial Day) we went to our favorit campground about 50 miles from our home, (Palmetto Cove Campground, Cleveland, SC.  I am posting links to this campground because hopefully next year Linda and I are thinking of being sponsor or organize a (Scamp Rally) for the Eastern side of the country with everyone from through out the country welcome.  I am not sure how many Scamp owners are located here on the East Coast, or near us in SC but hopefully there is more than I think.  I would like to have us combine our Scamp Rally with our group of Busnuts we are also a member of and I am sure you would enjoy seeing 30-50 40' buses all modified differenetly by the owners, such as what I am doing or have been doing to our bus for 13 years now.  If there is interest in this type of rally we will work diligently to arrange it and have entertainment, meals etc. that will not cost any rally fees or such.  This is just a gathering for us all to pitch in, and the anemieties at our favorite campground are all included if you go to these websites posted here just to look at and consider coming to.  I will get a consensus later on from those that may be interested, I assure you of a great time.  Here are the links to Palmetto Cove Campground in Cleveland, SC.  I know you will love it, it has all the 30-50 amp service needed, cooking facilities, and all fun you can imagine for a Eastern Scamp Owners Rally:

http://www.palmettocove.com/

This link is to their blog I think you will enjoy seeing, we go there as often as we can and the price is really, really reasonable for electric, water & sewer hook ups.  Example of camping cost for full water, electric and sewer hook up:

1) 1 night $22.00

2) 6 nights = $132.00  NOTE: 7th night is FREE!!

3) Monthly $297.00

Tax is included, this is the total price and WI-FI and connections for phones, especially Horrizon.  NOTE:  All units have to be self-contained in this park, (Shower & Toilet), This is SC law as Palmetto Cove does not have shower facilities.  Porta Potty works good though just to have on board, Palmetto Cove has public toilet bathrooms but the laws in SC are behind times at many things.

http://palmettocove.wordpress.com/

Here also is a couple of photos of our maiden camping experience from this past weekend to find out what other changes we wanted to make to our Scamp before our trip week after next to Alaska:

This is Linda relaxing after our initial set up with 1/2 of our animal companions, our guinea pigs, Peaches and Piper in their home made outside cage I made for them with a full bottom and on 1 1/2" blocks to help keep ants from them.  They did not stayoutside long but long enough for us to enjoy watching them discover Palmetto Cove.

While we were at Palmetto Cove, we discovered there was no mirror for us or my wife to put on makeup, comb her hair etc. all things women and men like to do before leaving their rigs in the morning.  so the first thing we did when we come home today was go to Home Depot and choose a mirror to our liking to mount on the bathroom door securely and now we can see how we look before leaving our rigs or get ready to go hit the town when on the road. Mirror cost $34, mounting brackets cost $3.  Another feature I do not understand is omitted by mfg.  when building these cut campers.  Another selling feature to me or us I should say.

When we undressed at night, we had no place to put our clothes when we undressed, had to throw them on the floor or where ever we could for at least this weekend.  This stinks too.  2 below photos shows bathroom door, on the inside that has wasted space and can be functional.  The second bottom photo, has 3 clothing hooks securely mounted that can hold our clothes at night, hold our towels for when we shower, they will be protected when you close the shower curtin, there is many uses for these hooks, another feature overlooked by mfg.  Where do you put your clothes, towels when used in shower etc. ??  We have no more problems now with that either.  Simple fix, very inexpensive to do to rigs before selling them, and again a good selling feature as these trailers are small to begin with and little things like this make them a little larger or less messy too. Note: these hooks are also very handy for us older fellows that may need to get an enema once in a while.  LOL  gotta hang that ole bad some place unless you use the portable one's in a 8 oz. bottle.!!

Below photos if my wife's idea, all our bedding is put into (collapsable Space Bags) that will shrink anything put in them by using a vaccuum cleaner.  We have a very small (Shark Vacuum) that fits easily under the left seating area in the cavity for the fresh water holding tank.  Linda shrinks down all our bedding, blankets, comforters if you bring one, Bed topping to make the cusions more soft, pillow cases etc.  We also will for our trip shrink down 7 days of underclothes for each of us, taking up little room in our closets.  You can lay them all on top of each other, you can have one male and one female closet near the door to separate who's is who's.  At the same time you can have 7 days worth not shrunk down in this same cabinet to use, you wil have 14 days until you need to do laundry for that kind of clothing.  You can also shrink down your dirty laundry and just take it to a laundry mat and open up the shrunk bag and there you go, your laundry is ready for washing.  Take them back to your rig and shrink them down to replace the bag you opened up to use.  They stack very, very easily and the amount of room saved is phenonominal.  This was a great idea of Linda's.  Now we have more space for good Stuff!! Package of Space bags at Harbor Freight, 1 large, 2 medium is $3.99 when on sale, $5.99 regular price.

below Photo is of our 19" DVD player / Television we use on our stove top wooden cover.  It just fits in there perfect.  We do not have a antena outside as yet, we use one of those darn cable converter boxes that come out years ago!!  I can't buy everything right now, our trip is way more important to have the money for.  Besides, when we go camping we sit by our Gas Fire Pit we have with friends or those we just met, talk until we have no more lies to tell and then go straight to bed for a great nights sleep.  We are not that hooked on TV when camping.

Another plan we come up  with was place to store our outside lawn chairs and other bulky things when traveling with out scamp to aleviate the space in our tow vehicle.  We just turned the cusions of each side of the camper dinning area around as in photos below, place our TV when traveling on the road face down on the one on the left with all the appratus needed to run it and have room for other light things if we need this space.  The cusion is then wedged between the things being stored and the table edge keeping the cusion upright and in position to protect what needs it so nothing has to be stored on the floor or in the tow vehicle.   In the left photo we have our (TWO) only lawn chairs, we will from now on put our shrunk bedding in their space bags in between the lawn chairs to stop them from clanging together, and also keep them from hitting the bulkhead of the camper and causing damage.  This is a lot of storage space to pick up by things that you may want to put outside after you arrive to camp for the night some place.

Well this is all we could come up with this weekend, not much but enough to fix to never have problems with again. Thanks for looking.

Another simple addition to our Scamp you might consider!

Hello Again,

Well today was a little project on the Scamp, had a lot of running around to do, had to get a full size spare for our jeep to go to Alaska, have tires rotated etc.  I just hope the original China made tires on the Scamp will hold up, don't have much confidence in China products at times, hope I am wrong on this one.

Today I come up with a quick idea for storing our glasses, and the TV remote when we are laying in our bed in our Scamp and just want to go to sleep or what ever.  There is no place to put the remote over your head or your glasses without bothering your mate if she/he is sleeping, reading etc.   So this is what I come up with, the photos will further explain how simple and inexpensive but effective this will be, at least for us.

Right side/inside of Scamp is the end we will use for our heads to rest when sleeping so that we can watch the TV on top of the wooden cover over the two burner stove.  This window opening will hold a simple, inexpensive tray for our glasses and the TV remote at night.

Plastic "MUD TRAY" used when taping sheet rock, all plastic and purchased from Home depot, about $4.

I cut down the size of the mud tray as photographed, so that the bottom of the tray would be about 1" high to hold our glasses and TV remote and not be too deep to be cumbersome to find anything reaching in the night overhead in the dark if you needed to.  The tray is tapered when made and the taper is still in the 1" height of the part you cut off which is still good so that when you mount it to the window sill frame of the Scamp everything will be hanging at a slant as well.

I used a Mini grinder to cut the lay out of the 1' bottom storage tray after scribing a line 1" high on all 4 sides to keep the tray sort of straight and good looking.

I used two of the original center bolts in the window frame to support the new storage tray and also added 2 more support bolts you can see just for strength of the tray.  I also used flat washers under the new sheet metal screws to also add strength of the tray so it will be better supported and not hang sloppily in the future.

Actual bedroom storage tray for glasses & TV remote in use or ready to be when we go.  Simple 25 minute addition that will make our indoor living more pleasureful to have storage for things which we have none of now!

Window curtin drawn for day time use if privacy is wanted, but with the curtin drawn the new storage tray is not seen and it allows the curtin to hang naturaly.

Hope this idea is helpful for you to consider doing.

Tray for glasses

Gary Lee, I really like your ledge that you created under the window to hold your glasses, remote, etc. when sleeping.  It has always been a problem, especially for the person against the wall, what to do with glasses after you are done reading for the night.  My only concern is, does this then create a problem when the "bed" is convered back to the dinette table as far as a person sitting at the dinette and trying to lean back against the wall/window?   Is your bed area a "permanent bed" and you don't use it as a dinette?  Thanks for additional info!

Tray for glasses

Hello JA,

We keep our bed in the bed position on this trip for place for our puppies to be comfortable and storage for our lawn chairs etc. when we travel on the road.  We have yet to use it as a dinette.  We normally eat outside when possible, and I sit on the bed against the corner with a comfortable pillow and my wife sits on the opposit side near the sink  with a pillow against her back for comfort as well.   We use plastic lap trays to eat off.  We tried once now that I thinki of it to break down and turn the dinette into just that and it was a lot of extra work for the wife to try to find storage in our particular case for the blankets etc. just to sit and eat.  So we leave it down, and on rainy days it is ready for all four of us to lay on to take a nap or what ever.  We have yet to even watch TV, to much fun mingling with new friends, walking etc.

Oh, that is very clever.  I hadn't thought about that option.  Thanks!

Palmetto Cove Campground

You are correct, Palmetto Cove would be a wonderful place for a Gathering. This spring, we went to the Alumalina gathering there. The kitchen and dining room are indoors and there are bathrooms in the same building. There is also an open-sided pavilion.
