USS Scamp

My late father served a valiant long career in the Navy in submarine service. We lived all over the world as kids. Coincidentally this is the last nuclear submarine he was commissioned on!

Thanks for the nice comment.

Thanks for the nice comment. He joined the Navy at 15, December 8, 1941! He remained in service his whole working career. U.S. Navy Chief. He was an amazing father.

Military at 15 years old

He must have been somewhat obfuscatory about his age. laugh There was a lot of that going around.

Dad - Navy

My Dad did similar. All he had to do back then was get Mommy to sign his enlistment forms and they would take him. Served WWII in the Mediterranean on a mine sweeper and got seasick the whole time. Took the offer after the war to move over to the Marines and they sent him to college and made him an officer. Stayed in through two more wars and retired in 67.

Yes, my father was 15 when he

Yes, my father was 15 when he joined the Navy. Many guys his age did this and records back then were scant. His father signed for him and he was in combat at 16! One story was that he was depth charged and his sub filled with water up to his chest! All remained calm and they got away and pumped the water out and ended up in New Gineau to make repairs!

Thank all who served

We salute all who served to keep our country safe. They were kids when they joined but mature enough to go serve for their country. Both Greg and Dougs parents must have thought their boys could handle it at that age.Would be a tough call for a parent to do that

I enjoyed the young American

I enjoyed the young American soldiers throwing chocolates out of the aircraft window for us in 1948.
