Hi Annette and John,
We did this trip in our 13 Scamp when the kids were about 10 and 7. We started in San Diego and went all the way up the coast. I have tons for you, but need to know where you will start at the southern end?

Hi Greg,
Fantastic------we will really appreciate your input! We are leaving July 1-first stop Williams arizona-leaving here from Phoenix--------than to Las vegas, 2 nights and we have reservations at Lone Pine California for 2 nights. We thought we would travel up through San Francisco over the bridge and do a couple of nights in the wine/Napa country? We are planning on getting "home" to az after 6 weeks. Is it do
able??
that's all we have for now.
Just starting to put together the trip so any info will be great. We would enjoy staying in Oregon for a few days-

We did the whole thing over 4 weeks so 6 should be no issue. You are getting a bit North at Lone Pine and missing some great coast north of LA. We love Carpenteria near Santa Barbara. I'd recommend you get over to the coast on route 1 and do the Big Sur as a must. Just south before the Big Sur is Hearst Castle, the Elephant Seal Beach which are a lot of fun. We stayed for a while at San Simeon State Park to see that area, Moonstone Beach to the castle. North of San Francisco we enjoyed a KOA at Manchester Beach back on route 1 and even have the certificate for surviving the road to Manchester you are not supposed to take. Next up was the redwood forests, you can spend lots of time in that area.
We stayed on 101 going up the Oregon Coast. The Jet Boats on the Rogue River at Gold Beach are a kick. Just north of Coos Bay you hit all the OR sand dunes parks which are a must see. Just north of Florence are the Sea Lion caves, but at that time of year most of the sea lions are down south. At Coos Bay if ur into running is all the Steve Prefontaine museum and HS track where he started.
We spent some time at Newport, Yachats, seal rock and loved all that area. The Oregon State Ocean Museum at Newport is interesting. North on the coast is Tillamook and the factory tour for Tillamook cheese and ice cream restocks the trailer for happy hour cheese n crackers n dessert.
Basically, if you stay on 101 through OR and WA there is no shortage of lil towns, great walking beaches, good campsites. Tons of lighthouses along the route that are fun tours.
We all voted at the end of the trip we want to go back to OR for a long stay on the coast there.
We made reservations ahead for all the S of San Francisco campgrounds. N of Frisco only needed reservations for the parks in the redwoods forest, nothing else was a problem. Oregon, we had reservations ahead for most of our campgrounds.

WOW thanks for all the info-----------I sent it along to our friends and we will start making our route-----------have you ever camped in Vanouver???
We just picked up our new Escape in Chilliwack BC over Thanksgiving break and what we did was stay at the KOA in Lynden, WA. We then did day trips to Vancouver and Vancouver Island from there. It is only an hour into Vancouver from Lynden and easy to do.
I may be able to add some more info as we go along since we did the West Coast trip quite some time ago.

If you do the Sierra Nevadas camp at Rock Creek/Tom's Place (north of Bishop) - awesome forest campgrounds with electric!!!!!! Great hiking and fishing. If you do the coast take 40 to Bakersfield - 46 to Paso Robles and on to to Cambria (10 is a killer with traffic) - and camp at forest campground by San Simeon ($20 with hookups) . The coastline between Morro Bay (also has a nice campground) is my favorite with breathtaking coastline, good beach access and hiking, and lots of wildlife. Also, it is not as crowded as other coastal areas. Be wary of taking 1 thru San Francisco - there are no signs when you get into the city!

We will be leaving here on the 15th of July and also going up the west coast and into BC. We will be leaving from Phx and our first main stop will be Yosemite.roo Here are some of the places we will be possibly stopping after Yosemite. Redding, CA; Bookings, OR; Lakeside, OR; Tillamook, OR; Forks, WA; Port Angeles, WA. Maybe we will see you on the road. We will be going from Winthop, WA into BC and ending in Nakusp, BC. Have relatives there. From there we will be heading to St. Vincent, MN (visiting family) and then to Crown Point, Indiana (class reunion September 9th and 10th). From there not sure how we will come home. Any suggestions would be welcome.
