Living in NW Montana, it is time to winterize the camper. I followed the owners manual instructions very carefully. It said to run the antifreeze through the cold water line. It said nothing about running it through the hot water faucet. I thought that was odd, So I went to the local RV service department. The gentleman explained to me that there is a handle to turn on the hot water tank. This is a bypass handle that needs to be turned so the antifreeze does not go into the hot water tank. Then turn on the hot water faucet and run antifreeze through the hot water line. I went home and tried to do that. I finally got antifreeze to come out of the sink faucet and shower head. I was quite sure there was going to be antifreeze in the hot water tank. So I took the plug out of the hot water tank (on the outside) to drain the tank again. I was right, the tank was under a lot of pressure and about 1/2 gallon of antifreeze drained out. There was so much pressure in the tank that I got a small amount of antifreeze splashed on my face.
I did notice that there was a video re winterizing the Scamp and it did explain about the bypass valve.
Now I am concerned about the hot water tank. There is bound to be a small amount of antifreeze in the bottom of the hot water tank. Will that cause any harm? I will plan to flush it out in the late spring/early summer.
I would also like to know if, during the winter, the bypass handle should be left in the position that goes along the water line, or across the line?
Thanks in advance for your hellp.
