We currently own a large travel trailer, but we have been very fascinated in Scamp trailers. I just feel the need to downsize and lighten the load. We were lucky to get 7 or 8 mpg when we pulled our trailer with our Dodge Ram 2500 that we just traded in. I like the layout of my trailer, but it's a lot to lug around. We originally bought it because we had a seasonal campsite on a lake. Now we have it in storage, and we take it on vacations to different places. I would be able to keep a Scamp in my mother-in-law's yard if I got one, and I wouldn't have to pay for storage.
My kids are teens and I realize they won't want to camp with us forever, but they enjoy taking trips with us. We do have 3 dogs though, and we take them on every trip. My dogs range from 30 to 50 pounds. Does anyone else travel with a family and 2 or more dogs in a Scamp?
I know it could get crowded, but I feel like we would be able to do a lot more traveling to further destinations if we could pull something like this around. I have a mini van, but will probably trade it in for a Jeep next--I could pull the Scamp with that too if we didn't want to use our new truck. I guess I just want more freedom and want to get good gas mileage.
I would be interested in a 16 footer. Does this idea seem realistic? I'm sure we could make it work if we wanted to. I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions. Thank you.

2007 30 ft Wildwood BHSB by Forest River, but interested in a Scamp
We traveled half the country in our 81 13 Scamp with two younger children. People used to hoot and holler when we piled out in the morning.
There are a couple of considerations for you. One, there is a weight limitation on the top bunk of the Scamps, if I recall it was around 80 lbs. The bunks are approx 24" wide so with the width and weight limitations it would be a challenge with Teens. You could mod some reinforcements to the top bunk to shore it up for a higher weight limit. Add 3 fairly good size dogs to the mix and it could be interesting.
One suggestion that some of the old time Scampers gave us when we were running around with four of us was that when the older kids would go with them, the campgrounds usually allow you to pitch a tent on the space if there is enough room. The older kids could be out in the tent with a dog or two and you'd probably be good to go.
We did go to the "dark side" after we sold the Scamp, but because of the many reasons you list about gas mileage, size, etc. we came back to molded fiberglass this fall. I sure missed my Scamp for those few years we had the Sticky.
Maybe some other folks that travel with kids/dogs will chime in as well. One good idea is that if there is a gathering anywhere near you that you can head over for a day or overnite you can really check out the trailers since we all love to give tours.
Hi Greg, and thanks for the info. My kids are 15 and 18, so I guess those bunks might not work out. You're right--I really need to just be able to see the inside of a Scamp in person. I was in Frankenmuth, MI last summer, and a couple had a little 13' Scamp. Their adult son and his baby stayed the night with them too. I told the couple I loved their camper, and the man said "Do you really?", and I said "Yes". He told me they absolutely loved it too, and that it was "all they needed".

We are going to pick up our 16ft Scamp side dinette model this Saturday. Not sure of the year yet. It was last licensed in 1999. It's covered in moss. We are going to trailer it out of the woods on a flatbed. We are so excited to have such a great resource and get involved with the club.
How exciting! You'll have to swap moss covered Pac NW Scamp 16 stories with keepontrying....
Can't wait to see pics after you go and get the Scamp and ur progress bringing it back to life. We're all here to help you, so ask away. Be safe on the pickup and we'll wait to hear how it goes.
