How do you clean the black substance (mildew?) on the exterior of a Scamp that is stored outside in the elements year round? I've tried soap and water, which works okay, but not all the mildew comes off. Also, the Scamp has picked up splatters of freshly painted yellow road stripping (now dried) on the front, which is stubborn to remove. An environmentally friendly cleaning product would be preferred, but it it takes chemicals, I will use them sparingly to clean the exterior. Suggestions would be appreciated.

Cleaning the exterior
Barkeepers friend works pretty well and also works well on shell chalking. Just have to keep a watch on not rubbing too hard or using a power polisher with it. I have also used a very fine steel wool very carefully to remove paint splatters and such.

i was fortunate enough to get a car wash brush made of hogs hair. Not sure if it really is, but that is what it was referred to in the industry. Car wash operators routinely change them out, so stop by one to ask. I use Meguiars car wash and it took it right off with the car wash brush. Now ready for more Meguiars wax and no more black steak coming down the sides of the Scamp!

there is this stuff I've only ever seen at the Dollar Store, it is literally called Awesome Cleaner. it is yellow and in a spray bottle. it takes off the black stuff and bug and all kinds of things. No clue what is in it and don't use it on your windows, but otherwise I use it all the time
for your windows just use warm soapy water and a soft cloth, dry with another soft cloth. Plexi scratches easily

What is a good way to remove the white residue on the outside of the Scamp? I just bought a 13' 2008. It has only been used 4 times, so the interior is like new, however it was not stored in a garage. It has a white chalk film on the outside. I would like to clean it off and then put on a good wax. Is it worth buying a cover if it can not be stored in a garage?
Thank You, Penny

I do a two-step process on older shells for the first two years. First, I use 3M Marine Restorer and Wax (16.9 fl-Ounce) and a Ryobi Power Buffer This gets the chalking off the shell and gives it a pretty good initial shine. Next, I hand wax and buff the shell with Meguiar's M6332 Flagship Premium Marine Wax - 32 oz. which gives a great finish and a longer shine.
The glass has always come back for me with this process. Usually, on the second year polish, the glass comes out looking close to new.
There are a number of cleaning topics listed in the Maintenance Table of Contents as well to check out.

If you have a 2008 it should be able to be brought back to a factory shine. It is a three step process, compound, polish and then wax. It is not easy but it will be worth it. 3M has a boat care system and it can be bought from Amazon. Finesse II is the polish glaze (step 2) and in a lot of cases is all you will need to bring back the shine then wax. Also 3M makes a polish wax combo which works for light oxidation. If you look at the Finesse II link it will show the 3M polish and wax below the polish/ glaze. You may want to take the trailer to a boat repair shop and see what they would charge for a professional detail job. Some will suggest the floor wax finishes, if the trailer was 30 years old that may be a solution. With a <10 YO trailer I think you will be happier with a professional shine. Also if you start applying stuff to a chalky finish you can do more harm than good to the finish.
