I am about to do my first small change to my new 2015 Scampy. I am going to put a clothes rack between the 2 small cupboards on the door side of Scampy. I'm going to put wood inside each cabinet to provide more support to avoid having the screws pull out. Is there any trick to drilling holes in the fiberglass cupboards?
I know this is a pretty elementary question but I am nervous about putting holes in my sweet little home away from home.
Hi Marcy,
You may want to take a look at these two projects where the closet shelves were added with pvc pipe framing and no holes to drill in your new Scamp. These work great and easy to build.

I like the PVC idea. I would be afraid that a crack might form coming from the hole that I would drill. I can't that would happen but I would not want to take a chance either especially on "shiney and new". I know I read that a lot of people use those sticky back hangers rather than screws also when hanging things. Plus, with the PVC, you won't be locked into any certain configuration.

put a piece of strong tape on the inside of the closet before you drill your hole this helps to keep the fiberglass from fraying and cracking wouldnt hurt to put some on both sides
Thank you everyone for your advice. I love how you built those shelves and I am thinking about where I could put some. What I needed was a place to hang a few blouses & jackets. After reading your suggestions I called my local RV repair place. He suggested I drill the holes a couple sizes bigger than the screws so there was a little bit of movement. He liked the idea of the tape on both sides as I drilled the holes to reduce the risk of cracking. He also suggested I hold a piece of wood inside so I was drilling into something. I drilled 6 small holes and all went well. So, unless the cracks develop after the fact, all is well. I used common closet rod brackets. Between the cabinet and the bracket I put a piece of rubber gasket material cut to the size of the bracket. I'm thinking this will provide a little cushion as I drive down the road. I also put a piece of wood on the inside which I screwed the screws into. Here's hopin cracks don't develop after the fact. I will write another post if that happens. No news will be good news. Below are a couple of pictures.
Looks like you did a good job Marcy

Great job Marcy.
I put 1" dowels painted white between my cabinets. I simply drilled 1 hole in each cabinet and then ran the screw into the center of the dowel. I've had no cracking and still have none after some 14 years. I actually put one on both sides of my trailer. A year or two later I decided there was room for a small shelf. I keep CD's on the curb side and DVD's on the streetside. I use the streetside rod for my dish towels.

for a temporary rod, that works well, ibought an adjustable length shower curtain rod at wallmart. you lengthen and shorten by twisting the rod and it stays up by friction and the non-slip rubber ends .it is white and matches the cabinets. less than $10. great for hanging clothes to dry. just measure between the 2 rear cabinets and get the correct length rod.
