Got our new Scamp!

Hi All,

Well, we picked up our new 13' Scamp in Backus April 28th.  Great service at the factory.  Our salesman (Jim) took us into the factory and hooked us up with Big Dave (not David the Production Manager) and Dave went over every system and gadget on the trailer.  He then sat down inside and answered every question we had.  When he and we were satisfied that we had all the info we needed I backed the Forester in and Dave hooked the trailer up, checked the lights, and we were good to go.

I took the trailer out in their massive parking lot and drove around, adjusting the brake controller.  We then completed the paperwork and handed over the check.  After that Jim took us on a factory tour - vey impressive!  Everything is done by hand - no robotics there.  Even the holes for windows are cut by hand with a grinder.  Then we were off South to Pine River (about 10 miles from Backus) to overnight at the Riverview RV Park.  We figured if we found anything wrong it would be nice to be able to tow it only 10 miles back for a fix.  As it was, the trailer was perfect, but we got a call from Eveland's saying they had caught a spelling error on the bill of sale, so a short drive took care of that.  There were bunches of new trailers awaiting pickup, although Jim said there were far more just a couple of weeks earlier.

We took an extra day getting home, stopping at Prentiss Park in Ashland, WI.  Very nice place, normally $20 with 30 amp electric, but as the bathrooms were not yet open they said just leave whatever we wanted in the envelope, so we had a nice wooded site with electric for $10.

The trailer tows almost like it isn't there.  "Trailer on the back" was our mantra going home, lest we forgot.  Gas mileage averaged 20 mpg, a drop of 8 mpg or so.  There is one particularly steep hill on the way back that the Forester barely makes in 5th gear with no load, but with the Scamp it breezed up in 4th.  I'll be happy to answer anyone's questions - just post a reply.

Hi Greg,

Hi Greg,

Thanks - I actually measured the ball height before we went to pick up the trailer and got a hitch thingee that curved up a couple of inches to keep it level.

We'll be going on several local trips to get the feel of things and fill out our lists of stuff we still need.  Then in July we have a 3 week traveling trip planned as well as a trip around Lake Superior in September.

Looking forward to spacious Scamp living (we upgraded from a 3-person backpacking tent.)

Congratulations & ...

You'll have some wonderful trips in your new Scamp.  Backpacking is great, but it's soooo nice to be up off the ground with some dry space to weather a nasty storm. The trip around Lake Superior will be a memorable one (we really enjoyed ours last year).  There could be snow even in late August north of Pukaskwa Prov. Park in Canada so don't forget your longies - though coming from the Keweenaw you're probably acclimated already.

Thanks!  We felt that the awning made it look a little lopsided and besides, we're cheap - the factory awning costs $875 and we can get a dining fly for a lot less.

We weren't sure if we would need A/C and the unit seems a little big in comparision to the trailer but we did get the prep done for the A/C, which they do for free, so if we decide to get it installed there won't be any problem.  The roof fan is really powerful and creates a great breeze through the windows when it's on exhaust.

Air Conditioner

i guess it depends on where one lives. Here in the Midwest, the heat and humidity can be oppressive. Can't remove humidity with a Fantastic fan! We shall truly enjoy our AC when such times come, and they surely will.

We have owned our 13' Scamp

We have owned our 13' Scamp 40 years. Until the "restoration project" last winter, we had used a lightweight tarp as an awning. (We had added small U-bolts to the Scamp body as tie points; now people regularly ask, "What are these for?")

Last fall, we ordered a custom awning from Marti's Vintage Trailer Awnings, and riveted an "awning rail" along the top of the Scamp. The awning slides in and out of the rail, and is carried in a small Sunbrella bag supplied by Marti. Two collapsible, adjustable tent poles make up the rest of the assembly (staked on the outside corners of the awning, which has grommets in these corners).

Yes that it my plan also.. to

Yes that it my plan also.. to not drill any more holes in the fiberglass until the trailer is 40 years old (LOL).

But seriously, to get an awning or not seems to be a difficult question for many people.  Were you happy without one?  Why did you, after 40 years, decide to get one?

Wieght was one major reason I did not order a Scamp with awning.  Is your new addition a light weight one?

I tend to think like that

I tend to think like that also ..  a detached, lighter, and bug-proof shelter seems a better option.

However, I have been following another thread about heat buildup in the trailers... and it seems that an awning might shade the camper enough to lower the temp enough to make it comfortable most of the time..   so now I am not so sure that I don't want an awning.
