Howdy,
After 10 years with a Pop Up, I finally got my hands on a 2006 16 footer. After a month of being busy I got to pull it 250 miles to a favorite ranch in Los Olivos for a weekend of bike riding fun. Bought it mostly for the self sufficiency of BLM land, for my small family to have a place to stay and to allow me more bike riding trips.
Got most of it sorted out without reading the directions. The thermostat was coming on (even in the off position) and sweating me out but that seemed to be fixed with a flick of the metal on metal switch in the thermostat. Don't have the shower/toilet sorted out yet but that is yet to come. Thankfully my 2002 6cyl F150 had no problem pulling it up the grade from Oxnard to Thousand Oaks.
I'll probably have questions along the way but wanted to say thanks as I've already gained a great amount of info here.

Some things on RVs are universal and others specific to the manufacturer. On cupboards, are you talking about the fiberglass ones or wooden ones? I guess I am wondering if you want to add more because otherwise I have seen some really neat things done to really spruce up the older ones.

I just don't know where to begin. I'm concerned it may need a new axle and have read that I should get one that has brakes in it to protect my towing vehicle. Of course I am anxious to start remodeling the interior but suppose I should worry about the mechanicals first. Any thoughts or ideas of costs I'm about to incur? I'm in Rockford IL if anyone knows where I could get estimates.

Looking at the picture, it is definitely axle replacement time. Find a good trailer shop, in my case I found a good horse trailer shop and they will estimate it for you. They'll do everything, from ordering the axle from Dexter to installing it. Usually, it will run in the $500-800 range to have a shop do the axle. The axle itself with brakes is around $300 or at least it used to be.
Takes about 4-6 weeks to get an axle in to the shop and a day or two for install. At a minimum I'd get an axle with brake flanges so they can be added, but you might as well get one with the brakes since ur doing it. This will require a brake controller to be installed in your tow vehicle as well.
I had the exact same 81 13 Scamp for my first trailer. Solid lil fella. Here is my Axle Replacement Saga. Let me just say that it is a very unusual axle replacement story, and most won't have anywhere near the same experience.

I am not familiar with your area but I googled and it looks like you have choices. In your place, I would check for online reviews and then see if I could get a couple of different quotes on cost since it can really vary. Also, if you see anyone with a camper nearby where you live, I would ask where they go when they need work done. RV shops are usually more expensive. We used a sort of farm trailer place to get a hitch installed and brake things on the vehicle.
