Getting closer to getting my Scamp!!

Here are a couple of questions...

1.  Brakes--I like having them, especially since I live in the mountains.  I've been reading about how it's sometimes easier to get a new axle at the same time.  You probably have posts on this--I haven't looked yet, but just tell me to search it!!  Would it be best to have this done at a camper place like Camping World that is close to me?  Would they know if it would be good for me to get a new axle?  I have NO mechanical abilities so I will be depending on the people who are working on the Scamp--and maybe some of you!!

2.  This Scamp didn't come with the rock guard on the large front window.  Would you suggest that I get one of these installed?  I will be going on dirt/gravel roads with it.  If you think it's a good thing to have, how would I go about taking care of this--is it something I would order from SCAMP?  Would Camping World be able to install it for me?

I'm sure I'll have more questions!  I love this site and really appreciate your help.  Maybe you'll see some posts from me soon with pictures!

What year Scamp are you

What year Scamp are you considering? Life span for the axle is about 20 years give or take. Most or all 16 ft. Models like ours has electric brakes and a vehicle controller is essential to connect to the hitch via the plug for the Scamp. As far as the rock guard, I feel it is a good idea.

Brakes

Hi Doug, my Scamp is a 2004, so it's fine as far as the axle, but when I called the Scamp service dept. to ask some questions the guy said if they were going to do anything with brakes they would just put on a new axle that's equipped already.  I just talked to an auto repair place I've used up here in Estes Park and they say they can put on a new axle for me.  Do you think it matters who does this type of work?  Does it need to be an RV place?  Yikes!!  I already have the brake controller installed so it's ready to go.

Well, your axle is 10 years

Well, your axle is 10 years old, not that old. During winter storage, do you jack up the trailer and put it on jack stands to lighten the load on the axle? Its the thing to when in winter storage. I do this as a rule now. It truly extends the life of your axle. Also take the tires down to 20 psi, same for the spare tire. Winter storage is critical for the life of the axle. Now that saying, a reliable place to install the axle may be a good choice. The factory is a sure choice. Maybe while at the factory they can re-spray the bottom of the floor for more protection of the wood. Talk to them about this, may be a good idea.. . List on the forum what you intend to do.

It's a 2004 13'--I'm going to take it to a auto repair place I like and have them look over the axle to see if it has flanges and then go from there.  Thanks as always for all the good advice!  It really helped me think this through!
