Hitch question - new to travel trailers

Not sure if this has been asked/ answered previously. Is it ok to keep my 16' trailer hitched to my truck when at the campground? We made our first trip in our Scamp, and noticed that many tow vehicles were unhitched from their trailer. We also noticed that many of the trailers were large trailers (longer than 24 feet); and uses additional stabilizers in front of the trailer. Does the extra weight on the truck suspension cause undue wear on the truck?

unhitched

I feel no need to unhitch if it fits in the spot and I'm not going anywhere. and I like the extra stability in high wind.

I do unhitch for better access  to the stuff packed  in the tow vehicle, and nothing is going to punish the suspension more that our great American highways.

Unplug the electrical so as

Unplug the electrical so as not to drain the tow vehicle. More than likely you will have to unhook in order to level the trailer and be able to use the refrigerator.

Hitched OK

I usually stay hitched if we don't need to go anywhere.  The stability is nice.  The trailer can be leveled by driving onto blocks.  The front jack can be lowered for leveling enough to take the weight off of the tug but remain hitched.  We have a voltage sensing relay that automatically disconnects the trailer when the tug is off.
