Mold Remediation on 13' 1981 Scamp - Foam Interior

Greetings fellow Scamp owners! I just picked up a 1981 13' Scamp on Craigslist, so this is my first post (woohoo!).

I'm currently in the process of some major cleaning as I live in the Pacific North Wet and there are some leaky rivits on my trailer. I've been using a bleach/water combo, a dehumidifier, and intend on following up with concrobium spray. I'm curious if I will need to pull out the foam interior cover to get all of the mold? Most of the mold has grown on areas where there is a seam in the interior coating or on the wood in the upper cabinet. Can mold grow between the fiberglass shell and the foam?

I've read nearly all the forum posts here and haven't been able to get an answer to my last question. I'm excited to officially be part of the community and look forward to your insight.

Clean up

You are cleaning the ensolite as I would. The only suggestion is to use a paper towel with a brush on top to clean the irregular surface prior to using the mold control. I have not had issues with mold behind the ensolite,.Do not remove the ensolite. You can glue any loose places and seal the seams with ALEX calking and dab it with a sponge to match the finish. I paint the ensolite with Zinsser  mold and mildew paint and primer. Under the benches you have open cell foam with a thin plastic finish. I rip that out and use 3M 90 glue and install refletix in the out of sight areas.

Thanks Eddie

Glad to hear I'm cleaning it as the pros would cheeky. I will pick up some of the caulking and Zinsser ASAP. Thanks for the assurance that I likely won't be living in a mold hotel this summer.

Dealing with mold

Welcome to Scamp World.  I am sorry that you have a mold problem.  I have been fighting a huge mold problem in a basement that was flooded--not fun.  I would suggest that you patch the leaky areas first because the mold is a clue where the leaks are.  To get rid of mold, you have to cut off the source of water for the mold.  The mold could travel under the "rat fur" or in the wall if it is wet or damp, but if it is dry, it should be confined to the area where it leaked and is wet.  I would try to get rid of the mold that you can see first and see if that is sufficient before tearing into the insulation or walls.  I am guessing that you may not have a wide-spread hidden problem.  I also would recommend using white vinegar.  It stopped the mold growth for me better than bleach and is less likely to cause damage to walls or cabinet wood.  Also, I would take down all the curtains and let as much light into the trailer as possible.  Mold prefers dark conditions.  The dehumidifier should be a big help.  I think you might be able to get rid/control the mold without tearing out the insulation.  If you have to remove the insulation, it should be easy to get the mold off the fiberglass because it doesn't stick to fiberglass as well as material or wood.  Before you go camping, you should air out the Scamp.  It could get rid of some spores, smells from glue, fiberglass, cigar butts, or whatever, and just make the trailer smell nice.  Good camping.

Thanks Sunfish

Yuck! I couldn't imagine dealing with mold in an entire basement. Good luck!

It appears that the original leaks came from loose rivets, so I'll pick up a rivet kit on the Scamp website and get to work. I've got the trailer in my garage right now so there is no additional moisture intrusion and temp is relatively controlled. The dehumidifier has done wonders.

Thanks for assuaging my concerns regarding mold behind the ensolite. I'll keep up with the cleaning and do a mold test after to confirm it's gone.
