Our Scamp has hit the incubator!!!

Had a call this AM from the production mgr that our 16' Scamp has just entered the production line.

Well I assume not the whole Sacmp yet surprise but a mass if chopped glass, wood and steel.

It will be ready for pick up Oct.3rd 08:00.

Once checked out on everything and hooked up we should be good to hit the road by 10:00.

Boy the snooze you lose hit me square between the eyes on our Scamp.

When I first was ready to place the order the delivery was 2nd week of Sept. but we could not decide on a cushion color!
Yikes that small choice put us back nearly a month.

Learned that we could have placed the order and at the production start could have made any necessary changes.

Live and learn.

I also asked about wheels and if they were balanced from the factory.
Apparently not.
The mgr indicated they put out 400 per year and have only had a balance issue on 2 in the past several ears.

So I am off later this week to have the hitch, plug and brake controller installed.

Next taks is to search the Bring Fido site for a dog friendly hotel in Bakus so we can reach there the previous afternoon.

pick up

Ours will be ready September 30th,  had the same call on monday.  Trying to find a place for us and fido to.  On the way to and camp grounds on the way back,  it is a 19 hr drive.  I got the brake controller and lights,  7 pin thingy is done,  hope it works,  u-haul said no problems,   hmmmm.  I changed one thing on the phone, he said,  "this is the time to do it"   I had them install an outside plug. Time is getting closer. Carl

Hotel in Backus

You won't find a hotel in Backus.  It is very very small.  I live in SE Minnesota and stayed in St. Cloud, MN, the night before.  Then it was about a 2 hour drive to Backus.  There are lots of resorts around there that you can probably find lodgings with the dog.  It should be off-season, too, so won't be too expensive.  You will really be in the woods!

As a first stop, the KOA in

As a first stop, the KOA in Minneapolis works well,  The drive there from Backus is long enough to begin to get the hang of towing, but not too long.

Htitch installed

Had the hitch, brake controller and wiring installed Thur.

Good thing I stayed and watched the porgress as they insitlly forgot the battery carging wire to the socket. The fellow doing the work was a bit unghappy that the main desk failed to tell him that this also needed to be installed as he had to double the time to thread the wiring throught the frame while cramped under the car.  Cluld have done both wires in one go.

Anyway it appears to all be workign when they tested the brake lights and turn signals.

Escaped at just over $500.

Here to learn from others, what works and what doesn't

Uhaul install

I had Uhaul install my Hitch and Brake controller.  The only real problem i had is the Tech used pop rivets to install the wiring harness receptacle on a plastic bumper.  During a gas stop i noticed one had come loose. In an attempted to fix it the other one tore out.  I had a few tools with me but was having difficulties removing the rivets from the bracket.  Fortunately, a traveling mechanic at the next pump over was on his way to a hunting trip and was able to help cut off the metal parts with his tools (Free of Charge).  Fortunately i was at a gas stop with truck supplies.  I bought Zip ties and threaded them through the holes on the receptacle bracket and the holes in the bumper.  It is actually stronger now then it was , but i would rather have had the receptacle fastened else where.  I should have had the forethought to cover the installation more in depth before the work started.  Oh well, live and learn.

Fixing the U-Haul Install

You can fix your U-Haul install by using backing washers on the "Pop" rivets on the backside of the bumper. Better yet, get U-haul to install the backing washers on the "Pop" rivets, like they should have done initially.

If you decide to keep the "Zip Tie" solution, you should plan on replacing the "Zip Ties" annually because the Sun makes them brittle.

Happy Scamping !!!

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!

Zip Ties

The black zip ties of good quality are UV protected and can stand up to sunshine. We used them routinely in the aircraft industry.

Towing your scamp

A word of caution. I had my trailer hitch and wiring and controller done at eTrailer, a nationally known place that rates high. Well, they told me hit the road, the whole thing is automatic! Bull crap! They had my controller set for a 3 axle trailer and a rating of 9.5! When I towed my trailer back from South Carolina I was sliding the tires and smoking them! It was super sensative! I got to the RV center and a man there was very skilled at setting the controller. Now it is set for single axle and a sensitivity rating of 3.0. Tows and brakes great now. Be careful as to how your controller is set up friend.
