Greetings,

Just joined this organization ... looking forward to selling a Winnie 26' and moving on to a 13' Scamp (or similar) ... Madison/Huntsville, AL area ... rving since '85 or so ... want smaller as I'm using a Ford Ranger to tow ... so any help on getting to a Scamp in Alabama would be helpful ... that and advice on how to go about purchasing once I find it ...

Retired but still working educator ... Frank

Welcome Frank, glad to have

Welcome Frank, glad to have you join the clubhouse.  The tow capacity of an 08 Ford Ranger with a 4 cyl and manual trans is pretty light.

2.3L, 4.10, man trans  1580 tow capacity  MAX GCWR 4800

That will be a challenge.  Our 81 Scamp 13 loaded for camping and full propane tank weighed in on the OR scales a few years back at almost 1800 lbs. Scamp 13's typically have a dry weight with whatever options added around 1000-1200+ and then your gear.  If you had the V6 you'd be set.

Ford guy told me 1600 was more reasonable ... so I'm taking his word for it ... the weights stamped on the back bumper were: hitch is 200 lbs and max tow weight is 2000 lbs ... OK then ... here's the thing ... going for a light weight ... only one passenger ... me ... little by way of gear ... so I could be OK with a 13' without bathroom, ac, stuff like that ...

So ... is it reasonable for me to be looking for a 1000 - 1200 dry weight 13' and keep a "light pack" mentality ... or ...

Thanks in advance ...

Frank

Welcome. As for Scamp 13 shopping, the 13 is one of the most popular fiberglass trailers due to the fact people have smaller tow vehicles and it is a good starter fiberglass unit at a good price point and as some say it has a cute factor. Nice older non bath units usually run $3-6 K. There are exceptions but most under $3K will require work. Trailers over 15 years old will more than likey require a new axle and trailer brakes are also a consideration if you are close to your vehicle tow limit. You should equip yor truck with a 7 pin RV jack and have a 2" and 1 7/8" ball available since the older ones use the smaller ball. Also any trailers over 5 years old you should figure it will need tires.

There are several checklist found on other sites to check out trailer condition. Do your homework first because when deals show up you will need to move fast. When shopping it is best to have a budget and immediate access to cash because the deals don't last long. If you contact Scamp they will hook you up with a local owner to tour their trailer.

If you do your homework and pick up a nice used trailer and keep it up In most cases you can get close to what you paid for it since they hold their value very well. With a new trailer you will take a hit at first but after two years their prices are fairly stable.

Good luck on your search.

Eddie
