Going on a trip to Yellowstone in late September and first week in October we know things start to shut down but hoping it will be less crowded. Just looking for any tips or past experience people might have had doing this.

Yellowstone in October
Well, we went to Yellowstone the first week of September, two years ago, thinking it would be less crowded and a pleasant temperature. We were tenting! It was extremely crowded. Tons of kids! We couldn't figure out why they weren't back to school. Old Faithful was so crowded that we had to leave because we could not find a parking space and went back early the next morning! Temperature, 28 degrees at night! My glass still had ice in it in the morning! It snowed!! Did I mention that we we were in a tent? Wanted to go to the Tetons, but forest fires closed the road in. Tried to travel north into Montana on Bear Tooth Pass, but it was closed due to snow! Back to the campground! We were in a tent you know!! So when we finally escaped Yellowstone National Park and were headed back to New England, we deterred to Backus MN, and checked out Scamp. We ordered a 13 footer! I drove out last July and picked it up. And that's how we became Scampers!! Yellowstone in September?? Where's the Scotch?, I'm having a flashback!!!

I had to laugh all the way through that! Everyone should remember that the worst camping experiences eventually become the best stories. I was always a bit puzzled that I sometimes saw what looked like good camping equipment in the campground dumpsters. Then I overheard a conversation that explained it...one woman was telling another that after a weekend of bad weather some campers just toss their stuff in total disgust when they leave. Hopefully they didn't quit camping for good and just upgraded to a Scamp!

I have gone to Yellowstone 4 1/2 times: the first in 1959 when I was knee high. We were tenting there when they had that huge earthquake and some people were killed.. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th times were 3-8- years ago, two in early Oct, and one trip in late May (still tenting, or hotel-ling outside the park. (The 1/2 trip was cut short, real bummer, not because of the park; but because our teenaged daughter was in a totally foul mood... best not to go there...) Every other trip fabulous. Great weather, and each time when I looked at the huge Old Faithful parking lot and imagined it full, it blew my mind. Another thing really stuck out: In contrast to my 1st trip when my family watched whack-os wading in geyser pools, and we picked up litter (from cigarette butts to beer cans) I saw no whack-os, the park was pristine, and the rangers wonderful. I believe in some respects we have come a long way as a species. And now we have a new 13' Scamp. I can't wait to go back. One of my favorite places on Earth!

We had a great time in Yellowstone ! Anthony was right cold nights but day time temps in the 60s with sun it was t shirt weather. I
t was less crowded but think next time will go last two weeks in September a lot of things close up September 30 th. We still got by thankfully by using freecampsites.net and campendium.com. This picture is of Eagle river camp ground just out side of Yellowstone park Mammoth camp ground was full but the next day we got a spot so we could soak in the boiling river all day.
