I also prefer to do the manual inspect and lube. Not a fan of this new fangled stuff that can fail . hand pack and adjust will never fail , but is messy. I have seen more than my fair share of boat trailers on the side of the interstate with the wheel off the spindle. ( Always poor maintenance )
ac0gv has it right. When a trailer for a boat arrives at the lake, the bearings and hubs are warmed up from traveling and thus in an expanded state. Backing the trailer into the cold water causes the expanded grease, metal bearings, hubs and wheels to contract, which would draw water into the bearing cavity, mixing with the grease. The Bearing Buddies springs allow the cap face to stay pressed against the grease following it as it contracts, preventing water to get in.
Although there are Zerk fittings on the Bearing Buddies, the design blocks access to the Zerk fittings on the Ezz-lube axle, defeating their purpose.
