Water heater

Ok, just took the Scamp out on our first trip. It was great. We got the 8inch foam mattress from Wally world which is great. My question is about the water heater. I ran it on gas,it heated up just fine, but i had black soot on the vent door and up the side of the scamp. Is this normal,or should i be checking something out? Thanks.

Burner adjustment

No you should not see soot at all. There is a adjustable sliding tube on the burner tube closest to the gas valve. It has a 1/4 inch screw that holds it in place. It may be closed too much not allowing enough air to mix with the gas for good combustion. if you loosen the screw and slide the sleeve to open up more of the air slot should do the trick If you go too far it may not light reliably. The screw is tiny and will break off it you tighten it much.  Another possibility is a spider or bug has built a web or nest in the burner tube  and this can  cause similar  issues. If the flame is yellow and lazy at all when fired and operating it is likely not getting enough air through the burner tube. it should roar a little bit to be correct.   Remember it is gas and flammable so caution or stopping at a rv service center  might be a better safe option if you are not comfortable.
