We're hoping to get out this season. We've been teardrop campers the last five years, but our beloved Silver Shadow is going away, replaced by our beautiful Scamp 16 side dinette. With the teardrop, we had a tongue mounted storage box to store our shore power cable, wheel chocks, tools, etc. We've been reading up and we know how sensitive Scamps and other fiberglass RVs are to tongue weight, so we're thinking of alternatives to that kind of solution. So where do y'all store this sort of gear? My current thinking is to get a large plastic tool box to stow this stuff in and then keep in on the floor of the Scamp while we're underway. Are there other solutions that work?

Storage of outside gear
That is what I use--it has camp chairs, grill and extra bedding in it. Unfortunately the one my husband bought does not fit through the Scamp door, but it does fit in the back of my Jeep. I didn't really want it in my 13' Scamp anyway--it bounces too much. A 16' is more stable--my friend puts her cast iron grill right inside her door and it seems to ride fine.

When it comes to towing there are usually lots of replies. Start out by getting an honest weight of the Scamp. Then I like about 10 – 12 % of the total on the hitch. Mine is a little light but still tows nice. If you keep the box ahead of the axle you should be OK. I started with mine under the rear dinette and the hitch got too light. I now keep it under the side dinette, and all is well. With the crown of the road, I like to keep heavy things on the left anyway. (It was abt 600 lbs over the stated shipping weight,)
I have a custom front storage box on my 13' that's worked great. The tongue is a little heavier because of it but it hasn't been an issue for my vehicle. I think it's better and more convenient than having to keep all of the utility stuff somewhere inside where I already don't have much space.

I built a platform out of salvaged aluminum channel. Maybe added 5 lbs. to the tongue weight. Once I get the tank moved over (I need a longer hose) there will be enough room for a smallish box for the land line, tire chocks, leveling shims etc. But all of that won't come to maybe 25 lbs. I won't even notice it...
Please excuse me...I need to go camping now
