Hello again fellow Scampers,
Slowly approaching build date on a 19' 5er and we've got another dilemma; this time its the built in Water Heater.
The guys at Backus are offering two types of built-in water heaters: 1) Gas only , 2) Gas and Electric
The sales rep explained that the Gas+Electric option adds not only the option of hot water using off-shore power but also electronic ignition for the gas pilot while using propane. He also said that on the "Gas only" option I will have to go outside to re-ignite the pilot every time I want to heat water.
Has anyone experienced the "Gas only" option? Do you actually have to light the pilot each time? How much of a pain is it to go out to light the pilot?
Thx again for the input, and happy camping
David
I have gas only, and no you do not need to go out each time you heat water. Light the pilot, and set the temperature when you set up, and it is automatic until you turn it off when breaking camp.
My experience is the same. light it once and it works until you turn it off. the remote option is nice when its crummy out and you forgot. or you can turn it off from inside as they do make a little noise when firing/heating. having the electric option would save on propane use but is not a big deal for me.

We opted for the combo unit and while we have gas if needed, we have only used it that way a couple of times. We usually are hooked to electric power and the tank works really fast and efficiently when using park power. By the way, we never have to light the pilot with the electronic ignition and of course the electric just heats itself. We've been out for over ten weeks since we got our 2017 and the heater just keeps on making water hot! Actually the only complaint is that the water is too hot and we have to run some cold with it to be able to use it comfortably.
I just got the gas, have not used it yet in 4 years, i just heat the the water in a electric tea pot, to do the dishes and stuff. I wish i would have odored the gas and elec.. then i would hve used it more.
Thx for the input all
Seems we’ll be going for the Gas+Electric combo
