Shademaker awning bag fills with water

Hi there,

I just purchased my first ever Scamp and it came with a Shademaker awning installed.  We got caught in a good bit of rain on the way home and when we decided to inspect the awning, the bag was full fo water.  Once we pulled the awning out, it was obvious that this has happened in the past since the screws holding the aluminum frame together were rusted.  Who else has one of these?  What is going on?

Thanks!

Kate

How's this shade working for you?

Hi Greg,

I just purchased a scamp with a Shademaker awning installed and it seems to have a lot of problems collecting water. How has this been working for you? I would love ot hear your thoughts after using it a few years.

Shademaker Awning

Hi Kate,

I did install a Shademaker Awning on my very first 81 Scamp 13 a long time and many trailers ago. It is still on the road and used quite a bit by the new owner.

We don't get much rain here in AZ so not sure that I ever noticed this to be an issue.

A couple of things I'd try that could resolve this:

  1. At the top of the bag where it runs into the awning channel is stitched. Most likely the leak point where water is entering. Remove the bag awning from the track and liberally coat the stitched seams, like is done on a new tent with Seam Sealer.
  2. At the low point of the under side of the bag if water persists after seam treatment, I'd install some grommets across the bottom low point to allow the water to weep out and not collect.

I think that one or both of these steps might resolve it.

Of course, there is another solution. You can move to Arizona. wink

Thanks for your suggestions.

Thanks for your suggestions.  I might just remove the awning because it's in such bad shape. I don't think this southern girl would survive out in Arizona wink
