Securing Propane Tanks

The picture shows what I have done to help secure our propane tanks. Drilled two holes in the wing nut and added a chain and lock.  Because the battery is difficult to get at with the propane tanks in place we may have gained battery security also.

RE: Securing Propane Tanks

What am I missing here?  Perhaps something is not showing in the photo but it looks like all a thief needs to do is remove the hoses and then remove the nut on the hold-down bracket. At that point the two tanks, bracket, chain and lock could all be lifted off the tray together. The take the two tanks away and cut the chain off.

Propane

Gordon,

The lock is drilled through a hole in the wing nut. I don't think you'd be able to remove the wing nut as the lock and cable would prevent it from being spun off. Maybe with some major work or tools one could defeat it, but that's the idea. It makes it difficult enough they move on to the trailer next to you.

It does seem like this setup would help prevent the battery from getting lifted as well.  yes

Of course.. I knew I was

Of course.. I knew I was missing something simple.. it looked like the nut and the wing bracket right under it were separate parts, but I see now they are one price (or welded or something).

Wingnut

Thanks Greg, You explained it better than I did. Your right, the wing nut can't turn very far because the lock goes through a hole in the wing with the chain attached. I drilled a hole in each wing incase the tight position is different with different tanks. No theft devise is perfect. Somebody will figure out how to steal just about anything. The idea is to make theft difficult. I hope I did that.
