Current registration numbers for Sebring Scamp Camp

We currently have 49 trailers registered for Scamp Camp 2015.

Unfortunately, the campground has been sold out for some time, so unless there are some cancellations, finding a reservation at this late date will be a problem.  Looking forward to seeing you all in February!

2015 Annual Scamp Camp Recap

2015 Annual Scamp Camp at Highlands Hammock State Park, Sebring, FL

By Dick Freed

Record numbers of Fiberglass trailer enthusiasts gathered this past February at Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring FL.  73 trailers, with 120+ campers were registered for the event.

Although the meet was scheduled for Monday through Friday, many people came a few days early.  On Sunday evening, to begin to build community, (and to test out equipment), a movie Saving Mr. Banks was enjoyed by the early birds.

Monday included registration and set-up of campsites.  Monday late afternoon, the rains came, effectively washing out the later afternoon and evening program.

On Tuesday morning, Floyd Clark started off the day with the “tech talk” during which the people could ask questions about the “care & feeding” of our fiberglass eggs.

That afternoon, more registrations were completed, and mid-afternoon was the first ever KITBASH!  Dick Freed explained that it was a very simple concept.  Using a wooden airplane kit purchased from a local supplier, “make something other than an airplane!”  Anything in the kit is fair game, including the packaging.  Judging to take place on Friday afternoon.

This was followed by the annual “chili dump” Pot Luck dinner, postponed from Monday night, where people made their own chili recipes, and dumped them into one of two large roasters.  Scampers also provided cheese and various toppings and salads and desserts to go along with them.  Debbie Clark helped ready the tables, and served the chili.

Following the Chili dump, was the ever-popular ABC or Alice’s Card Bingo, named after Alice Vernezee, who hosted  the Scamp camp some years back.   Campers won prizes for going “bingo” in this game.

Ray Meyer was greatly missed, as Dick Freed hosted the game.  Ray has promised to return in 2016.

Wednesday was a busy day for Scamp Camp.  The Open House was held, during which campers could display the modifications they had made to their trailers with other campers.

Wednesday afternoon Steve McAdams gathered the group together for the traditional camp picture, which he always offers to the campers for a nominal fee.

Following the picture, the “Great Giveaway #1” was conducted.  People brought in items of a “White Elephant” nature, wrapped in newspaper.  A story was read “Christmas with the Wrights” during which every time the name wright was mentioned, the presents got passed to the right, and likewise when left was mentioned, the present got passed left.   At the end of the story, the present that you had, was yours!

That evening, the volunteer staff at the campground held the All-camp potluck.  Following the potluck,  Wednesday night at the movies was held, showing Dolphin Tale 1.

OnThursday morning, the volunteer staff offered breakfast rolls and coffee in the rec hall.  After that, Bob Anderson taught a craft lesson about making model scamps from walnut type seeds.

That afternoon, the group gathered at Homer’s Smorgasbord for a great and filling lunch.  That evening, the ranger volunteers had their soup supper.  Having prepared for it the night before, the sequel Dolphin Tale 2 was shown.  A campfire kept the moviegoers warm during the film.

On Friday morning,  Bob Anderson led his informative nature walk in the park.

Friday afternoon was the traditional “Great Giveaway” known as great giveaway 2.  Many nice items were placed on the table for giveaway as names were drawn.

Later Friday afternoon, was the judging for KITBASH !  There were fifteen entries, that were as diverse as could be.  Contestants were provided with a quarter, dime, and nickel to place into a container near each entry.  They could select first, second, and third place in their opinion.  Then the entry with the most money would be judged first, and so forth.

Friday evening was the final potluck dinner featuring hotdogs, buns, and condiments donated by Dave & Marty Krack.  Dave and Dick cooked the hot dogs.  Later that evening, the final night wine & cheese party was held around the campfire.

Saturday morning marked the end of programming for the week, as most of the group packed up to head back home.

My heartfelt thanks to those who were noted above in boldface print. for sharing their talents to help make the week a success.  I would also like to thank Jim & Kate Filer,  and all the other volunteers for their help in organizing Scamp Camp 2015. My apologies if I missed anyone who helped… and a big thank you.
