New 13'Scamp delivery July 5th 2016

Is it possible to put larger tires on the 13' Scamp without modifications? We are concerned about how low the Scamp sits. Tow vehicle is a Ford Explorer. Should we consider a lift? Will Eveland do this?

13' Scamp height

The 13' Scamps are intentionally low. The lift is for a customized look and that's fine and well.  The way they come is easier to step into and lower for towing against the wind.  Custom trailer shops might put a lift kit in it for you.  Scamp might as well, with an appointment.   As for large tires, I don't see what the upside of larger tires would be.  The axle is only rated for approx 2350 pounds, so the 13 is not designed for heavy hauling and the standard tires work very well.

wheels

Thanks for the info. One of our concerns is the difference between the size of wheel on the Scamp and Ford Explorer. Those little wheels have to turn much faster - seems like wear would be a problem. Our last travel trailer was a Jayco Kiwi. It was so low that it scraped at the least little bump and damaged the plumbing, etc when we pulled out of our driveway.

lift a 13'

Just putting on larger tires won't get the job done.  There isn't room in the well for any substantial increase.  If you add an inch in diameter, you only lift the trailer half that amount, ie 1/2", which wouldn't be appreciable.

The only way to gain added height is to have a lift kit installed.  This is essentially a 2" or 3" spacer of steel welded into place, between the axle mounts and the frame.  Another way to raise the 13' Scamp would be to remove the "up" axle and replace it with a "down" axle gaining perhaps 3" in lift that way as well.  Of course, a combination of the two would also provide lift.   All the while it is good to keep in mind that the while the body is being lifted, the axle is remaining virtually constant in relation to the ground, thus appreciable ground clearance for boondocking has not been improved.

In this market segment, having 15" tires and a lifted camper is much more typical of Casita 17 footers than of Scamp 13's.
