No freezer in Scamp 13'

I have a 13' deluxe front bathroom on order for delivery Sept. '22. I am considering upsizing to the 16' deluxe for a little more space, but in particular for a larger refrigerator w/freezer. I would prefer the 13' because I will be traveling solo and don't really need much space, being the minimalist that I am. I'd be interested in hearing how other 13' owners have worked around the no freezer issue.

I would go for the 16'

I have a 13' no bath.  I love it, perfect for my little 1-2 day work related trips.  I will be going on my first week-long trip in a few weeks, planning out food storage very carefully.  A friend has a 16' and she does a lot of longer trips in it.  The fridge/freezer is a definite plus.  The other consideration is with the 16' you can leave the big dinette set up as a bed/lounge area and still have the little dinette as an eating area if you are stuck inside.  I would hate putting up/taking down the bed every day.  I sleep on my couch in the 13' so I leave the dinette set up.  If cost and towing weight is not an issue you might consider upgrading to the 16'.  I was soooo jealous when my friend got her 16'...a bathroom AND a big fridge/freezer!  The 13' fridge is super dinky, I will be taking a Yeti-type cooler with ice along too.  I am not planning on keeping anything frozen, just making sure I can keep food cold.  I will probably have to make a grocery run midway thru the trip.  It must be soooo hard waiting for your build!  Hopefully whatever you decide will be the perfect fit for you.

13' refrigerator

Thank you, Rhonda. Unless the size is increased in the next year, I'll probably move up to the16'. I suspect that fridge space has been the same for 50 years, either with fridge or ice.smiley

Freeze

We too wish we had a freezer. Coming from a much larger Motorhome We are spoiled.  We have put a deposit on a 16#6  for that and more space reasons but is still over a year away.

Maybe someone will cancel

Maybe someone will cancel their order, and you might get a call asking if you want it.  Let your salesman know that you might be interested in that option.

Our work-around is that

Our work-around is that frozen items will still stay frozen for a while, then use within 12 hours or so.  The thermostat is set close to freezing as well.  Not much of a work-around; but coming from camping with no fridge at all, even a tiny one seems luxurious!

Another option

We had a Norcold 12volt cooler in our  preScamp T@G teardrop.  We set that temp to freezing and put our refrigerated food in the Rtic (yeti type) cooler.  We could always swap out freezer packs that way on longer trips.  You can buy 12 volt coolers to run off your car while traveling and hook up to your trailer when not towing.

Another option

We use one of those portable 12V freezer/ frig chest in the freezer mode. When traveling we plug it into the tow vehicle. With a 100W solar solar panel and a regular 12V lead acid battery it would keep things frozen if you have a fair amount of sun. If you stay in a campground they usually also have A/C plugs which will run the freezer. You will also have much more freezer space than in a camper frig. They usually sell on Amazon starting around $300.

I have one, a Dometic Cool

I have one, a Dometic Cool Box 12 vdc/110 vac which sits in between the second row rear seats in my Honda Odyssey van.   It is plugged in and powered on when the car starts.  Cools down very fast.  We run it at 34 degrees F.  It does freeze if turned down lower.  Goes with us in the pickup when traveling with the Scamp 19.  Has never given us any battery troubles.  Has been operating for 4 years now.  It can be used as a freezer or refrigerator, but not both at same time.  Served us very well when we took the grandkids to Yellowstone when I was between RVs.

Scamp Shipping Schedule

On Thur. I switched my order from a 13' to a 16' Deluxe Front Bath. Also, my delivery date was moved from Sept. '22 to late March '22, which meant I had to make that decision immediately. Not sure why the delivery date improved, but I'll take it. I was told that new orders delivery date is now 25 months out.

Scamp Refer

I had a 1999 Std Scamp 19' with the small refrigerator. That model had a small freezer that would hold one package of frozen meat, and another of vegetable.
