Newbie and that Old 4-Pin...?

Hi Gang!!!!

And a very Happy New Year to All!

My wife Mary and I are sorting our new/old 1977 Scamp 13' (no bathroom) and I had a quick question before I start going nuts with a myriad of electrical questions.  So I'll start with my first 4-pin question.  Which color wire is the one that goes to the converter in order to charge the battery?  Does the 4 pin even have a wire to charge the battery from my tow vehicle or am I totally reliant on my shore connection which happens to be the very basic 3 prong 120v?

I will try to draft a concise set of forum questions as to my set-up as it is fairly basic i.e. battery, converter, splice box (from shore connector), fuse box, and the wires to the various component lights, ceiling fan, and water pump.  As you can imagine it's all new to us, but considering the age of our scamp and it's general lack of "bells and whistles" I feel it could be sorted fairly quickly.  I hope I'm right.  LOL!!!!

As usual any input is greatly appreciated.  :D

Wiring 4 pin

Hi Guy,

Here is the standard wiring and color code for a 4 pin. Warning, previous owner (PO) of an older trailer may have changed wiring and not followed standard color conventions so may require some simple testing to establish what's what.

I'd highly recommend getting your vehicle wired up for 7pin and then you'll have a charging line run from the vehicle battery back to the new 7pin on the tow. You can then run it into the new 7pin connector on the trailler to the battery. 77 Scamps did not come with converters so if you have one it is a PO mod.

Hey Greg!!!

Hey Greg!!!

Thanks so much for the reply and the link!  I figured the 4 pin was not for charging as Scamp Service just told me as well; I got them on the phone about 30 minutes ago.  You are also right about the converter, it is new and is definitely a modification.  So essentially, my old 120v shore connection is my only way of charging my battery using the converter.  It's about as basic as you can get. I have some work to do and some decisions to make for sure.  It is all new to us (neither of us have been in a camper since the 1960's!)  I will work on getting the system I have working and see if it will be a workable long term solution for us.  At this moment I'm not too sure.  I will follow up with more questions as they arise and again, thanks for the help.

Best, Guy
