The door can be opened from the inside when it is locked. Just pry the latch to the left, (from inside) using a (spoon, knife, fork handle,) until it clears the striker. The inside handle will move the latch a little but not far enough to clear the striker. Hold the handle down and pry the latch a little further over. Out you get! Hope this helps!
For those that are concerned about possibly leaving the pin in the lock, you could install a deadbolt. This way you could throw away your pin to remove that problem of forgetting that you left the pin in the lock. If you do a search on the internet, you'll find many that did the deadbolt and love it...
