I have no doubt I can figure this out, but if anyone has done it and has any handy tips, I'm all ears.
My roof vent lid has started to crack at the corners, so I ordered a new one. Typical of Scamp, there are no instructions with it. The bar that includes the track for the raising lever seems a bit long. Is that typical? Should I shorten it by 1/16 - 1/8", or does it just need to be "persuaded"? Any experience on this?

I replaced my vent lid yesterday. Mine is the 18x25" Eixier. I ordered the lid from Scamp and it is an exact replacement and the bar was the correct length. I released the escape latch and worked from the top while standing on a painter's scaffold. The only thing that holds the bar & track to the lid are the little Phillips head screws that go thru the short pieces of angle iron at each end. Remove the screws and pull the weatherstripping away from the bar and the lid is free. Take the screw out of one end of the C-channel hinge and slide the old lid off. Reverse for reassembly. You could probably reuse the old bar if the new one doesn't fit.

Now it's a while since I made that repair, but I'm pretty sure I just cut the new bar to fit. You gotta hold your tongue just right to get it all to fit back together, but I made it. No more leaks!

i need to do this on my 1987 16. sadly it's all attached to a piano hinge with rivets (why rivets scamp???? SCREWS!!!!). i'm gonna have to drill out all the rivets and use screws with plumber's putty and cap them.
sounds like the newer scamps its attached in an easier manner.

When I replace the vents on Scamps I add 1x frame between the liner and the shell. Then use SS screws to reattach the new vent sinking them thru shell and into wood frame. Not only good screw base, but strengthens shell around opening helping to prevent spider cracking.

thanks greg, i'm actually just trying to replace the lid only, not the whole vent assembly (although i do appreciate that scamp sells it). the previous owners said during torrential downpours they would get a leak, but during regular rains or snows there were no leaks. the rivets and rest of the assembly are well caulked (gooped, not sure what it is) so it looks like that's not the issue. i bought the lid thinking maybe that would do it (30 years of weather and UV on that lid will do a number). gonna wait till the spring on that, it's freezing up here and i don't want to be working on her.

I hear ya, I have two ready to replace on my 19 Scamp. They do get beat up after a number of years up there.
Not hard to replace them when you don't have to replace the whole vent.
