I pcked up the 1985 Scamp 13'

I picked up my new to me, and, my first Scamp! A 1985, 13'. on July 24. It is so cute! It looks almost new. everything is original. I think, the tires too, although they looked brand new too. Registered it yesterday!

How we (my brother came to check it out) got the Scamp: I told the seller (Tony) I was afraid of old dry bearings and I was trying to find tires on rims, he replied that he checked and greased the bearings and said they look very good.  I located two new tires but, could NOT find wheels. So we left to get the Scamp, I figured, after getting the Scamp I would drive to the nearest place that could put my new tires on the old rims.  Tony turned out to be a big, big help. When we got there He was restoring a 1949 large Indian motorcycle with full skirts front and back. B E A U T I F U L !!!! So I know, he knows what he is doing. Tony put the tires on the Scamp's rims, for me. The weather was HOT! Tony did everything to send us off on a safe trip.

After towing 15 minutes I forgot I was towing, and I've never towed anything  before! The Scamp towed like a dream! We left at 11:15am., got to my house 11:35 pm..

Thanks to all of you for your advice! This is a great forum! I didn't get to see the last three posts till now. Everything was good advice but I had to get the trailer by Sunday.

Congratulations

What a smooth pickup. Great when you have a seller that has a workshop and skills on site. laugh

That one looks like it won't take much to bring the shell back up to snappy!

smooth pickup, rough trip.

Thank you for the Congrats,

The seller was great, very helpful! So the 3 1/2 hour trip took 5 hours to get there. The 3 1/2  trip home took 5 1/2 hours. My brother was the navigator and he went by the GPS that took us to interstate i-95 though Queens NY! bumper to bumper. the little Scamp was worth the trip. I'm very happy with this Li'l Scamp.

Greg, does the shell need a sealer before I wax it? If so, please tell me the name and type of the sealer. I've already sewn curtains and pillows, replaced the weather striping around the door and pulled the trim off the elephant hide, I would like to replace the trim because I don't want to paint the hide, the hide is spotless.

I have been on the SOI forums for hours and hours, I've learnt a lot from the members posts.

Thanks again.

Two Step Polish Wax

Hi Lis,

I do a two-step process on older shells for the first two years. First, I use 3M Marine Restorer and Wax (16.9 fl-Ounce)  and a Ryobi Power Buffer  This gets the chalking off the shell and gives it a pretty good initial shine. Next, I hand wax and buff the shell with Meguiar's M6332 Flagship Premium Marine Wax - 32   which gives a great finish and a longer shine.

The glass has always come back for me with this process. Usually, on the second year polish, the glass comes out looking close to new.

shell shine

Hi Greg,

I just ordered the two waxes. thanks for your advice.

Is the 3M Marine Restore wax a product you ONLY put on as a base (raw chalky shell) coat, and then not again? Once the Restore wax is on, you use the Meguiar's Flagship Wax from then on?

3M Restorer

I use the 3M restorer step each waxing until I'm satisfied the chalking is pretty well taken care of and then only use the Meguiar's Premium Marine wax going forward. It normally is the second waxing about a year in that really puts the final pop on it.

3M Restore, then wax, now?

Thanks Greg, I'm almost done buffing on the restore!  With the Flagship Marine wax, can I wax it now, before winter?  I would like the snow to slide off the roof.

Yes

Good time to get that done, Lis, weather permitting. Once the 3M is done the Meguiars really seals it up and protects longer. Once you've gotten the chalking under control you may only need the Meguiars next time.

Scamp Wax

i was so glad Greg  mentioned the Premium Marine Wax. It was so easy on, easy off. The result was a lustrous shine, and so much brighter. Our 2008 Scamp had yellowed. After applying the Marine wax, and using a commercial buffer, it looks fantastic. I also want to stress the Cal Mark cover. Parking a Scamp outside in winter weather leaves the Scamp,to,the ravages of snow, ice, sun, and terrible winter winds. The material in the Cal Mark cover is truly amazing, well made to last for many years. Even comes with a repair kit with many panels and top rated adhesive.

Your New to You 13

Nice find! Sure is in excellent condition! I use Meguiars wax and love it. Does a great job on the Scamp, and I also use a Griots Garage buffer. You found a gem for sure, so keep us all posted on your improvements and travels.
