I know Earl's 2015 16 Deluxe has a pilot light you have to light from the outside like the old water heaters. I don't know if Scamp is currently offering a water heater with the inside switch and electronic ignition. Anyone know this that has ordered recently?
The best way to explain the difference is for me to walk you through the process with both Water Heater types...
First let me explain how the DSI (electronic Ignition) system works. On the DSI water heater there is a "Sparker" that automatically ignites the propane whenever the gas valve is opened, with a "Pilot Light" system you have a constant flame that ignites the propane when the gas valve is opened. With the DSI system there is a switch inside your Scamp which turns your water heater On or Off.
So...
with the "Pilot Light" system, once you get your Scamp parked for the night, you need to go outside (in the rain, cold or snow), open the cover and light the pilot light in order to have Hot Water. This will continually supply Hot Water until you manually turn off your water heater (again, outside).
With the DSI system you simply flick a switch, from inside your Scamp, and you will have Hot Water in 10 to 20 minutes. The nice thing about having DSI is you can turn it off when you don't need Hot Water. For example, we turn the water heater on when we begin cooking our meal and turn it off when the dishes are done. Consequently our water heater runs for about 1 to 2 hours each day vs. 24 hours a day with a Pilot Light system.
As a matter of practicality, with this method we have warm water throughout the day to use for washing our hands or whatnot.
Having DSI is also convenient while we are traveling because we can have hot water whenever we pull into a Rest Stop for lunch or a quick overnight.
For me, DSI is the ONLY Way To Go.
If Scamp can't offer you DSI, maybe you can buy the water heater yourself ($380) and have them install it for you.
