Hitch height vs. sway bar

My 16 Scamp 2005 came with a sway bar/ hitch.  The hitch level on my Ford Escape was way too low, so I got the bright idea to flip the hitch and put the balls on the other side...except now the small sway ball  is on the left side and the hitch is on the right!  I know you experienced Scampers are snorting at how dumb this was...but that's how my non-technical brain muddles through these things...Anyway!  How do I fix the problem of needing to take the hitch up to a height of 21"? And I want the sway bar, it tows so nicely.

Hitch With Sway Bar

Without pictures any advice is being given blindly.

The way I understand it, your hitch was too low and you turned your hitch upside down and now your hitch height is "Perfect".

You also flipped the hitch ball and the small sway bar ball so they are pointing up. this caused the sway bar ball to be located to the opposite side of the hitch.

The easy answer is to move the bracket that holds the other end of the sway bar to the other side of the "A" frame.

Otherwise, look at your hitch assembly again. Does the part that holds the trailer ball and sway ball disconnect from the bracket that slides into the receiver?

   Kind of like this one:

If your assembly is like the one pictured above you simply disassemble the two parts and re-assemble everything so all is pointing in the right direction.

If this doesn't help, I suggest going to a U-Haul hitch shop for their assistance. They have the experience to help you, not to mention all the right tools.

One VERY SPECIAL NOTE:  Everything on your hitch NEEDS TO BE PROPERLY TORQUED DOWN !!!   Really, Really tight is not good enough. Hitches have very specific torquing requirements and your Safety requires adherence to those requirements.

As Always,

Happy Scamping !!!
