Hi all - I have read every post on here about the heater/furnace but I am concerned about how close the heater is to the bedding. I am looking at getting a high density foam mattress topper to put on the bed over the cushions. Having read that some memory foam and urethane foams are highly flammable, I wonder what would be safer to use? It doesn't sound like people have had any issues, but would like feedback, b/c I can't see myself using the heater all night long and worrying about the foam or even the comforter/bedding catching fire. It even has a warning about that on the heater itself. I saw many posts about plugging in a ceramic heater in the outlet below the sink area, and using a solar panel to keep the battery charged for use with the heater fan, and that seems safer. Is there really any issue or not? Thanks for your opinions!

Are you boondocking? If you want to run the ceramic heater plugged into the outlet you must have the RV plugged in, it needs 120 VAC. If I'm paying for full hookup I do it to save my gas. If you run roof fan or the RV furnace, the solar panel / batteries will run them for as long as you have sun to keep the battery charged that's 12 VDC.
Thanks for your reply - Yes it would be for when I am boondocking

We have a 1974 13' SCAMP. We bought it used in 1975. It came with the factory propane heater. We were always concerned about using it at night, when the bedding might (inadvertently) come into contact. When we gutted our 40-year old SCAMP for a full restoration in 2014, we removed the heater.
When connected to electricity, we heat using a small cube heater with 500-1500 watt settings. When boondocking, we use a Mr Buddy portable propane heater.
Hi! Thanks for the info - I had seen a few posts indicating doubts about the safety of the Mr Buddy, but not an issue for you it sounds like? You feel safe?

I would not use a Mr Buddy while sleeping. Some venting is important!
Yes, thanks mccownw ! That's what I needed to know, so it's not a solution for me. I will figure out another way....
Appreciate it! Patrice

I can understand your concern. Why don't you hang a cocking thermometer against the grill of your Scamp's furnace and turn it on. This way you can measure the temperature. With that information you can make a better decision.
We have a 2016 13' Scamp and we use our Suburban furnace a lot. We feel safe using it.
I will tell you that during the warn season, we tape over the external furnace vents with aluminized tape. Wasps like to build nests in the vents. The nest block air flow, with enough blockage the sail switch will not allow the furnace to light.
Thanks for the ideas! Very helpful ...........

Your RV store will sell you very nice little screens to cover the external heater openings. They work well to keep the wasps out. When in the camper you don't have to "remember" if you took the tape off or not! I think the screens should come WITH the furnace but they don't!
