Favorite options for new 13' Scamp

We are hoping to get a new 13' Scamp, but we can't find any to look at near home. What are your favorite options that you really like on your Scamp? We are a couple with grown children - so it will be just the two of us.

On a S-13 the big bed is the first option. The second is the option package this contains the most popular options in a single package. After that it is personal preference.

We have Scamped off and on for 8 years (2-3 months at a time) and put 191,000 miles on the "Lil Critter" in the USA and Canada. (note that that is "trailer miles" Bevie does not give me credit for driving around without the Lil Critter hooked to the car.)  LOL

We purchased the above with the trailer when we bought our Scamp new,  We would not be happy without any of the above listed items.  We did buy the ice box rather than a refridgerator.  For the first five years that was fine, however, now we wish we had purchased the two way reefer (120 v./ propane) due to the huge increase in the price of ice.

We LOVE our Scamp!!

Based on 39 years of Scamping

Based on 39 years of Scamping, we have concluded that the question of options comes down to personal preference.  If, while Scamping, you want all the conveniences of home, you will want to replicate, in so far as possible, all the conveniences of home.  However, you must also reckon, for each built-in option, with (1) added cost, and (2) added weight.  One consideration is this question: How often will you make use of each option?  (In our instance, in 1975 we bought a used Scamp with a built-in furnace, which we recently removed because we had used it only 6-10 times; we prefer to use a small electric heater.)

Which model 13 are you looking at?  I.E. do you want to order a bath model or one with the bunks and have a porta-potty?  There are quite a few SOI members showing in your area that have Scamp 13's so maybe one will PM you and have you come by. Also, have you called Scamp Trailers and asked to see one by you?  They maintain a list of owners all around the country that will show you their trailer and Scamp will put you in touch with them.

If you can stop by a gathering, and there are some coming up not too far from you, then you can see a whole bunch of trailers and talk to the owners.

Do you have camping experience?  Going out a few times tent camping can sometimes really reveal what you want in a trailer as far as features.  Every time we took the family out in the tent it hailed, so we found out we wanted a hard shell trailer.  laugh Some people only cook outside, some only cook inside and some a mixture. I come from a lifetime of "backpacking" so I tend to only cook outside with some exceptions.

I would assume in your location you would want AC and that is something that is best ordered with the trailer as a factory install.  Bob and Bev bring up a good point about the refrigerator. They were fine originally with an icebox and now they would prefer a fridge.  That can be added, but they are expensive lil things to add down the road.

Mcown brings up some good thoughts on the heater, because that does take up cabinet space which is at a premium in the 13. We heated our 13 with an electric like they did and a Propane heater when we were off the grid. With our current 17' I'd personally endorse the built-in heater.

The big bed option would be something to consider very seriously, especially if your plans include long outings.

Welcome to the clubhouse! Keep us posted as you progress and ask away, we'll all be glad to help.

Thanks

Thanks for all the good ideas. We got our Scamp 2 weeks ago and we're getting ready to take it out. We're trying to figure out where to put things and wondering how much they slide around during travel. I need to look at the modifications forum because I can see that the cupboards are open and need shelving. The openings to the cupboard over the sink are small so I'm not sure what would work best in there. It's an experiment! We got the bigger bed and the shower/toilet combo. All the neighbors are excited and coming over to have a look.

We have custom-fit pieces of

We have custom-fit pieces of paneling which divide the upper cabinet into three sections, one behind each door: works well, both to organize things (like dishes) and keep contents from flying back and forth in the larger cabinet.
