This week on the way to the Grand Canyon, our 2003 Scamp 19 caught fire while towing. It appears that an electrical short occurred in the wires where they enter the trailer on the front left, inside the lower storage bins. Fortunately the fiberglass of the bins contained the fire to the area of the bins, but not before destroying the contents of the bins as well as everything sitting on top of the bin - shoes, clothes, backpacks, etc. We keep the hinged top bunk shelf up while towing, so the cushion was not on the top of the bin - if it had been, I suspect the whole trailer would have gone up.
The wires inside the trailer are completely unprotected, ans susceptible to damage from items in the bin, as well as just normal vibration against the sharp edged of the fiberglass. If you have a scamp, it would be wise to inspect and protect those wires so that you don't suffer the same misfortune that we did.
Just want to thank you for mentioning this. It should be possible to provide protection for those wires, I'll definitely be looking into it before I travel again.
I'd have thought that the wiring would have been protected by the fuse at the trailer battery, or the fuse at the tow vehicle's battery. Maybe an improper fuse was installed?
We had a similar incident with our 1999 standard 19' Scamp. I believe it was caused by a 3M scotch lock connector that overheated. I replaced the entire bundle with a junction box, and replaced the bundle in the other side with a duplicate junction box. On our 2020 Deluxe, Scamp has already done this for us.
