Bikes inside Scamp

Has anyone attempted to store bikes inside their Scamp (in particular a 13') while traveling?  Curious how that works for you. I recall reading a while back of someone successfully doing so, but couldn't find their post. Thanks.

challenge

its hard enough to squeeze me thru the door - getting a bike inside would take some gymnastics!

plus, more weight on the trailer...

Mounting

These trailers do not really ride well so How would one mount/secure bikes in there without tearing up the inside.  And Scamp states that these are not cargo trailers I figure it could be done but How???Safely

I did it once

Long story, but I had to put my bike unexpectedly in my 13' after a new bike rack on a friend's Scamp was too unstable.  13' Scamps bounce A LOT--my cushions etc. are always all jumbled up after a ride.  But, I had to get it in there.  A very tight squeeze, but I got it in after a couple tries.  I padded every contact point with blankets and rugs so the bike wouldn't damage the interior.  I had no choice on that trip, but I won't do it again.  And that was only one bike.

bounce A LOT?

If your trailer tires aren't balanced, bouncing can be severe. I wasn't initially aware of that since ours weren't balanced when we picked our Scamp new in 2006.

I live in Michigan

I live in MIchigan...our roads are a horrible mess.  If you have ever driven I-94 from IN to MI, the difference is painfully obvious!  It rides fine on smooth surfaces.  Surprisingly, most UP roads are better than the Lower Peninsula.  Heavy truck traffic, road salt, and the freeze/thaw cycle rip them up pretty fast.

We did it

We ran our bikes inside our 16 foot for our first two trips. 2-year-olds bike on the bottom bunk, 6-year-olds bike on the back bed, mom and dad's bike in the center aisle, pushed to the rear and bungied through the frames.  it was fine but couldn't open the fridge until we unloaded them.  the bathroom door was a squeeze but we fit.  The only issue we noted was if they shifted in transit, the bike handlebar could knock the gas knobs on the stove open, so I'd remove those before travel.

We couldn't figure out how to get our hitch mount on the rear without paying a ton for it to be welded, so we bought a Jack-It rack for the tongue https://amzn.to/32i1z4h and a single roof rack for the van.  Still keep the little bike in the bunk.  It's been awesome and installation was a snap.

Everyone is tripping about weight and I'm not sure what you're towing with, but we've got a minivan with a 3600 lb towing capacity, the weight with full tanks and bikes is still like 900 lbs short and the bikes on the tongue don't change the towing in any noticeable way.  If your towing capacity is threatened by the 100~ lbs of the rack and bikes, a vehicle roof mount rack might be the solution.

capacity

Certainly we are at the max tow limit with our Subaru Crosstrek  and pushing the 1,500 limit. But never had an issue with stability/sway unless we got below the 10% tonugue  minimum. After that it was far less stable and something as simple as wiggly bikes on the rear could set up a sway and be scary.  A good tight Yakima rack with two adult bikes can reduce the tongue load by nearly 1/2 of the weight added to the bumper. Then filling the 13 gal tank of water ( Not Recommended ) got me well under 100 lb and not a good idea. I purposely wiggled the steering wheel back and forth  at different speeds and after 60-65 it was not stable or good. . I too recommend balancing the wheels  much less moving of items inside and screws coming loose. Its just physics and good to pay attention.

Good looking out on the wheel

Good looking out on the wheel balancing, I hadn't thought of that in trying to get these screws to stay in.  I'm considering replacing my wheels and tires and will have them balanced at the same time.

Aluminum wheels

When we brought our new  13 scamp home I ordered new aluminum wheels and transferred the tires that came on the trailer. I had them balanced the same time. We like the look and so far so good. We will still put new tires on around 5 years of age for safety
