bearings

wanted to know if my 1996 original axel hub assembly can be unbolted and replaced with a hub ready to go  if a bearing or race goes bad while on the road or do i have to replace the races and bearings on the side of the road  thanks

Bearings

It would be difficult to do on the side of the road. Watch a Youtube video and you'll see why. You don't want dirt in there and you'll need too many tools to drag along with you.

Best thing to do is have it done before you start traveling for the season and check them occasionally and you shouldn't have any worries. I replace the grease annually (Its easy because I have EZ lube axles) and I inspect them and the brakes every third year. The brakes have been the only thing ever needing any repairs. Again check Youtube

I do keep a spare set of bearings and races when traveling but I would have to find someone to change them.

To change the hub along the side of the road would add allot of extra weight to your travel rig and still need to stay in a clean environment. Plus having a grease gun and a couple of tubes of grease.

Does type of ball bearing grease matter?

I had my bearings re-packed last summer when I reached 12,000 miles on Scamp.  I've put 5,000 more on since then and want to do the 3 squirts of grease in each wheel.

I picked up a 3 oz grease gun which came with a 3-oz grease cartridge.  This grease is called multi-purpose Lithium grease.  Will this lithium grease be ok to use on my wheel bearings?
Thank you.  Wanda

I'm no expert but have heard you don't want to mix lithium and non-lithium grease types.  That is, if your bearing is already packed with Lithium grease you're OK, else get non-Lithium to match the existing grease.  Maybe you can ask the folks who packed it last time what they used.

One of the best channels on YT for product comparisons and reviews is Project Farm.  He did extensive testing on various types/manufacturers of grease.  Bottom line was that Lucas Red 'N Tacky Grease proved to be the most durable and resistant to forces which degrade lubrication capability.  It's what I started using on my Scamp bearings.
