Live Oak, FL... checking in.

Hey scampers, placed an order for a 16' Standard w/Layout 3, 15 August 2017.  Joined SOI for all the great info offered, and to help with the wait for pickup (next summer) in Backus.  Plenty of time to gather a Scamp travel tool kit, break-in the generator, build a step, and decide on which direction to go from Backus.

Welcome Phil

Glad to have you in the clubhouse!

The time will go real fast now that your order is in. You'll enjoy the 16 and you should have it in time to Escape the heat. wink

Thank-you...

Thanks for the welcome, gathering bits for my Scamp kit has begun.  Wife suggested a tote marked Scamp/Backus, and that I store it in my shop.  Will use a Weigh Safe 180 Hitch #TB4-2 so there is no question of having the proper hitch height, and a Tekonsha Prodigy P3 trailer brake controller.  (Both trucks wired for P3, and factory tow package both trucks.)

Considering installing SumoSprings Solo Rear Bump Stop Upgrade Kit: SuperSprings SSR-610-40... not intended to increase load capacity, but to improve handling with Scamp in tow. (Toyota Tacoma Off-Road, double-cab, V6)

SumoSprings

roddenby51,

I have had several Tacoma trucks. I installed the SumoSprings on the current Tacoma I have.Tacoma comes with light leaf springs and the tongue weight would cause the back end of the truck to sway up and down when hitting a bump like railroad tracks or back road culvert pipes. The SumoSprings eliminated that and keep the truck setting level. I'm not a mechanic and it took me 45 minutes to install. My last truck I installed Helwig spring helpers and they workd well too. Your truck will ride a little stiffer when you get the SumoSprings on and it will lift the bed about 1/2" inch from what it is now.

SumoSprings

Thanks KV... your experience with SumoSprings matches my expectation.  I recently towed a 16' livestock trailer (minimum of 2500 lbs. empty, dual-axle) with under 1000 lbs. (2 mini-mules and Shetland pony) live load.  Both my vehicles (Tacoma and Colorado) handled the load like champs, with minimal input felt from the live load.  Colorado (tow package) is rated @ 7,000 lbs. tow and Tacoma (tow package) is rated @ 6,700 lbs.

The Colorado (Wife's vehicle) does a great job towing, and it has disc-brakes in the rear... Tacoma has rear drum-brakes.  Both trucks are optioned equally, tow equally, Colorado has a slight fuel mileage advantage.  Good that I have until next summer to decide which vehicle makes the trip to Backus.
