apologies if this is listed somewhere: how do I determine what size brakes are need to for a 1990's model scamp 13 footer? any brand or kit type preferred? brake controller? thanks, still helping my buddy put this thing together. great forum!!!

adding electric braks to a 13' scamp
First determine if you have brake flange plates on your axel. Scamp 13's had 2.2 Klb axles with 7" brakes. Eastern Marine in De. sells the 7" Dexter brake backer plates. I think they also carry the 7" brake drums. With a 20 YO trailer you may be better off just replacing the axle with one with brakes.

My question is this: Why do you want/need brakes on a 13' Scamp?
because I tow with a 2000 Jeep wrangler and sometimes I feel a bit "pushed". perosnal choice mainly.
You should feel safe when towing anything and while 13's many times aren't equipped with brakes, most times they can be added. Keep us posted on what you find out. Eddie's advice above about replacing the axle if it has never been done is sound advice and shows any signs of being at tbe end. The new axle can then simply be ordered with brakes.

But at about $100 a side it may be better to get a brand new 3500lb axle with brakes which the cheapest place to get that is Redneck Trailer supply which is really top shelf for trailer axles.
