Hi all - We have never owned a camper and are looking to buy a Scamp 13' w/ the bunks. The factory is too far to visit, and we've never actually seen a camp before, so I thought I'd post a few questions -- - looking through old posts, this forum has been helpful already!
- Cabinets...should I get all that we can? Or does that start to get too crowded? We aren't very handy, so modifying later on makes us nervous!
- AC - how hot does it get inside the Scamp? We will also be traveling with a dog and plan to leave her inside at times. So is AC really necessary? We live in CNY, which doesn't get too hot compared to being in the Bad Lands!
- Bed -- standard or the 54'wider version. My better half is 6';and I"m not sure he'll be comfortable in the standard size. Any opinions here? And if we do get the larger size, what changes in configuration to accommodate that?
- Electric Brakes? Necessary or not?
- Lighting.....is the optional lighting work well? Or is it just as easy to stick up one of those electric lights?
- And finally.......how does the shipping work? I've heard such great things about Scamps, but also quality problems at times. We can't pick it up and do a formal walk through. What if there is an issue when it's finally delivered to us?
- Taxes...we live in NY -- would we also have to pay MI sales tax ?
There is a scamp gathering near us this weekend but we can't make it to see any of the campers. Is there anyone in the CNY area that would be willing to let us take a peek at theirs?
I'm getting in touch with someone from Scamp soon, but thought I'd get thoughts from owners as well! We are really excited to imagine that we'll be using this next year!

You really need to see a Scamp (esp the 13) before buying one. Some people think they want a 13 but move up after seeing a 13, and trying out the bed. The bigger bed in the 13 is an option but then the trailer gets really small. Call Scamp for a list of nearby owners who will show off their campers (and perhaps receive a small check from Scamp if you buy one).
We thought at first to get a 13 but then figured that if we were under wet weather, the 13 would not afford much room for us. We are so glad we got a 16 for the added room. We have every option available now.

for all your suggestions! The AC was something we kept going back and forth about, since we are used to none with a tent, but I think that will be on our list now. I keep reading that after seeing a 13, that many bump up to a 16. Will call to try to find one in our area. Am exited to think that we may soon be ordering ours!
Kathy,if you plan to spend any time at all inside the camper,jump up and get the 16ft.That extra 3 ft really does make a differance in the living quarters.13ft becomes very tight when more then one person spends any time inside.We ordered the 13ft and tho it was nice,we only kept it nine months,and moved up to a 16ft.So much better not having to make and set up and down the back dinette each day to sleep on

We love our 13 standard with a big bed. We have the rear overhead cabinet but not the front one. We never have all our cabinets filled. You can store stuff in your tow vehicle too. Not having a bathroom makes the 13 much bigger. We have not found that we needed a bathroom in our camper. The big front window makes for a more roomy/airy feeling. The awing is almost like having another room. We do not have A/C. (we live in Maine!) But we have taken our Scamp to Florida twice. Once in May and once in June and did not feel the need for A/C. The ceiling fan works well to bring in the cooler night air.

I am so delighted we have a nice shower, potty, sink in our bathroom. Makes it wonderful when we are under weather, or the urge to visit the little room in heavy rain. No need to get dressed to walk several hundred yards up the to "house" to do your business! Selling a Scamp with such a bathroom makes it easier to sell as well. No, buying a Scamp without a bathroom just does not make sense to us, but then, its a big world and those out there that don't want it, well, its your decision.

My wife and I started out looking for 13'. We wanted something we could tow with our Subaru Forester. However, we are limited to buying used, and a 16' was what we found in our area. We just got back from our first outback, fall weather camping trip, and we are so glad now that we got the 16'. Ours is the model with the side toilet and the bunks in the front. We were with friends who have a 16' Casita that has the front toilet (nice, bigger), and the side dinette with fixed chairs (not good, takes up a lot of space). Ours seems much roomier and has a better kitchen - more counter space.
We tow it with a Toyota Tacoma that we already had. The trailer pulled the mileage down to about 18 mpg in mountain driving. I don't think that's too bad.

We would love to get a 16' standard with the side dinette to have the extra room and to avoid making the bed into a table each day, BUT the bigger 54" bed is not available and I don't think we (2 average size adults) could sleep well in a 44" bed. Before we order our 13 with big bed, I'd just like to know how others deal with this dilemma. Is the small bed ok for 2 people in the 16? Is it worth being in a smaller trailer to have the big bed?
I am 5 ft.8 inches, my bride 5ft.2incehs. We have the 16 with side dinette, and love it. We fit fine in the rear full time bed. Get the 16 if you can, it's worth the extra room. We also have the shower, potty, sink and love that too, would never have a trailer without a bathroom or shower.

If you sleep in sleeping bags head to toe the smaller 44" bed is a lot more manageable.
