Kansas Ticks

We fought winds all across Az and NM last week, terrible winds, and  I thought that would be the worst of what we'd have.Well how wrong I was,We made it to the sons in Southeast Ks and he has an infestation of ticks in his back yard that is just unreal! My plan was we would sleep in the Casita and both sons would stay in the house....Well as soon as I heard the word ticks,I literally ran for the house. So Launey and sons unloaded what we needed in the house and got covered with ticks, not kidding here,30 ticks a peice each time they would go out....I knew there was a reason I loved living in the desert.Scropions at least are easy to see.Im just wondering if any one else traveling in other states are having problems with ticks and chiggers in their travels?

I often get chigger bites. My

I often get chigger bites. My flight physician prescribed for me, Quell lotion. I went to the pharmacy with Dawn, and the Pharmacist asked if she needed any? I said no, just me. He brought the medicine to me and again asked if she would need any. I said no, just me. He then asked how long that I had crabs! I said NO! I have chigger bites and showed him my ankles! Same medicine I later found out! Funny!

Chiggers and crabs (scabies)

Both are mites that burrow into the skin.

Chiggers and Crabs DO NOT

Chiggers and Crabs DO NOT burrow into the skin, just bite. That is a fallacy and they do not burrow in.

Crabs (Scabies) and Chiggers

Go to page 2 of this medical website on crabs (scabies).

http://www.medicinenet.com/scabies/article.htm

However, you are correct about Chiggers. They only burrow their feeding tubes into the skin.

However, that is a distinction that I have never felt it necessary to make to my patients who need treatment.

Kwell Lotion (not Quell Lotion) is Lindane Lotion, an insecticide. Applying an insecticide to the skin will only be effective if the mite is actually at the site of the irritation. An insecticide is not useful if the mite has bitten and dropped off.

Ants in Central KS

With the rain, the ants are horrible here in central KS.  We are treating our yard and taking Sevin dust on our camping trip.  What normally works is either taking longer or not working.  We also have problems with chiggers and I appear to be sensitive to their bites.  Any time now, fleas will be a nightmare here.  We try to minimize the use of poisons but it gets harder every year.  It really pays to get some really light weight, collared, long sleeve shirts to wear as cover.  Here, we also have some kind of spider epidemic.  I have not seen a frog, toad or snake since moving here 4 years ago.  It creeps me out.  I need a pet lizard!

Cathy, not words I wanted to hear

Didnt really want to hear those words about central Ks and ants and all the others since we are now in Hutchinson at the state fairgrounds till Sat....hopefully all those lovely little critters will not find us.I had chigger bites one year think it was 1996 and was so sick and bad that I had to go to the doctor for treatment and they still lasted anout 4 months,I was younger then and sure dont need no repeat of that again lol...I did bring a white long sleeved blouce to wear over my shirts so hopefully I can avoid em all...good luck on your yard.Oh I wouldnt mind seeing a toad or a frog, not so much so with a snake,I can do without that lol

COE Council Grove, KS

We just came back from 3 nights at the COE park in Council Grove, KS (Flinthills) and the bugs were not bad there at all.  But, it was 17 degrees below normal during the day, and 14 degrees below normal at night.  We had rain, wind and hail.  We were supposed to stay 5 nights but surrendered and came home on this, the only day that it isn't raining.  But, the park was beautiful and Flinthills were greener than I had ever seen!  Wal-Mart sells a pack of 12 sticky traps for about $5 and they work pretty good especially with spiders.  The liquid Terro works good with ants but it they are "sweet" eating ants, you have to add some peanut butter then drip the Terro over the peanut butter.  You'll know if the ants you have are ignoring it that you need to add the peanut butter.
